I love Christmas, but there are two things that tend to cast a shadow on my holiday spirit every year. One is people griping about commercialism. The other is people griping about how Jesus represents the true meaning of the day.

Having to listen to either point of view (or both at the same time) has bothered me since I was a kid and because of that, I was pretty happy to find this article in U.S. News & World Report. For anyone else who's as sick and tired of the Scrooges, enjoy.

Each to there own I guess. I work in retail and is surrounded by christmas in October so by the time the day comes I have worked many a late night dealing with stressed customers and just want a day of sleep before dealing with sale time on boxing day. So not much time for friends or family or anything that resembles the holiday period. But I guess that is no different to the millions of people who work shift work or have to work over holiday periods so I'll stop complaining and push on through to the other side.I've got a job and my health and my families health is good so all good on the upside.

Fun read, thanks for posting. I'm in the secular Xmas camp myself... no religious underpinnings (even have Jewish heritage) but I loves me some December 25th :rock :rock

Someone said Jesus was born during the Summer months and they moved his Birthday to the solstice time of year. Meh, I don't know. Maybe one of you bible loving nutjobs can expand on that. If it's even true.

What we know as Christmas is the ancient pagan festival of Saturnalia. In the pre-Christian era, as the winter solstice approached and the plants died, pagans brought evergreen boughs into their homes as an act of sympathetic magic, intended to guard the life essences of the plants until spring. This custom was later appropriated by Northern Europeans and eventually it becomes the so-called Christmas tree. Jesus was born in the summer, his birthday was moved to coinside with this pagan holiday were they ultimately lit fires and slaughtered goats.

So I haven't read the article but have no problem with commericalism or the absense of Jesus. In reality most hyper-religious people stick the ultimate belief that everyday is required for worship and only those who observe the two major holidays of Christmas and Easter get on their soapboxes and complain because it helps ease their own guilt about being a lesser than Christian.

He was born in the Spring. Prolly April-ish.

I see no problem with a secular Christmas. The good feelings and stuff that are around aren't christian intellectual property. I see santa and all that as a conduit for everyone to celebrate the season. It is all okie doke with me.

I love Christmas... but I'm not religious at all...
so considering that it is as Pagan as it gets... it makes sense!!!

I don't see why it can't be alittle of both. That's how I look at it.

Actually, Christmas has become just another day to me. That happens when you're not not involved with a lover or have kids. :(
