Wow, blast from the past. My sister and I had the set, and like you said, the art was pretty intense. Very Ralph Steadman (?) like.

The stories weren't so scary, but the artwork was terrifying for an impressionable 1st grader.

Yea, very much like Ralph Steadman drawing images from hell. :lol

That's crazy that the artwork you posted is from a kids book. I still have the set somewhere, felt they were worth hanging onto for the artwork alone.

Holy crap. I bought the whole set of three at the annual school book fair back in first/second grade. I think I still have them. I was also surprised at how mature the artwork was.

I only remember a few of the stories, but from what I do remember, they were more shocking than scary.

Alvin Schwartz' art is insane I remeber it clearly in my mind just thinking of those stories. The art made the stories even scarier.

Ah Alvin Schwartz was the writer I remeber he made another book that was scary and bizarre called BOO it was really creepy. It was all about what it's like to be a ghost.

Wow....nostalgia trip here! I used to check those books out of the library when I was in elementary school all the time.

I bought the hardcover treasury that contained all three books with the original artwork back...I want to say around 2005 or so during October. Just saw it sitting there and I had to get it thanks to the memories I have of reading those stories.

I think I still have the trilogy still lying around somewhere. My sisters and I used to scare the **** out of each other reading these. Hope it translates well onto the big screen.

I've got the trilogy as well. I remember getting banned from borrowing this book in second grade because every time I did, I kept running around showing people the artwork. :lol My enthusiasm nearly put that book on probation. Always thought it was funny how many school librarians don't even know what they're lending the kids.

I use to have on of the books, still somewhere in my house, I’m going to try and find it tonight and post a pic.
