OMG... I just read on IGN that the old Shinobi series from Sega is being resurrected on the 3DS (and man does the trailer awesome). Are any of you familiar with Shinobi? Personally, this was the series that got me into video games. Joe Musashi was my childhood hero :monkey2.

Here's the trailer for the new game:

And just for fun...

"The Revenge of Shinobi" - Chinatown level:

"Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master" - Surf ninja

i remember really liking the first one (complete with Spider-Man, the Godzilla type dino and the "sort of" Hulk)... the 2nd one didn't quite live up to it.

Revenge of Shinobi and Shadow Dancer was a favorite of mine. Now I might have to get a 3DS just for this.

pretty cool, i really enjoyed the last Sjinobe for PS2, its ashame they didn't keep the same art style

Meh... Shinobi for the PS2 was really just a failed attempt to get the series started again. The only thing it had in common with "Shinobi" was the name, but everything else was just... different. In fact, so much so, that it lost the "spirit" that made the original games so great. I think one of my biggest gripes, was how Sega replaced Joe Musashi with Hotsuma (to this day, I still don't understand the reason behind this). Then there's the fantasy setting in Shinobi (PS2) with floating demon heads and sorcerers, that made me feel as if I were playing hack-and-slash version of Final Fantasy mixed in with Okami.

So far, it seems as if the new game for the 3DS is attempting to get the series back on track. The storyline is like a prelude to the old games, and the main character is Musashi's father, Jiro Musashi.

As for the art style, I think they're still keeping it, to an extent. But, yeah, I agree, the PS2 version did looks pretty nice.

Awesome!!! Loving the return to the old school gaming roots. Im also a fan of the PS2 Shinobi games, and I bought it used for $1.99 back in November.

Tell me about it! I'm loving the 3DS more and more. I was thinking how awesome it would be if they (Nintendo and Sega) released/revamped some other old school games as well... like Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Thunder Spirits, Primal Rage etc. :horror The possibilities are endless. Hopefully, Shinobi is the start of a new trend!

Looks cool.

That PS2 game had some cool stuff, but the game felt a bit underdeveloped. Kunoichi didn't help either.

Yeah this is sweet news. I love 2d side-scrollers/platformers/beat-em-ups. Thanks for the post!

Also if anyone remembers Contra (named "Probotector" in Europe) there is a new one coming on 3ds. Although Amazon has the release date listed as December 31, 2020. Probably blasphemy on this thread, but I prefer NInja Gaiden to Shinobi.

Still, cool to see Shinobi return.

No, not at all :lol. Ryu Hayabusa and Joe Musashi were the two most popular video game ninjas back in the day. The times have been much better to Ryu, though.

I do not like the art style. Looks like a DS game that got moved over to 3DS near the end of its development cycle.

Shadow Dancer was one of the true, classic Sega Genesis games IMO. This game's graphics look pretty pitiful by today's standards, though. I agree that it looks like a DS game.

SEGA needs to release a true arcade ports of their Shinobi collection. Shadow Dancer for the Genesis was a waterdowned version. Anyone remember the Saturn version of Shinobi, that was pretty cool with live actors.

I never got a chance to play Shinobi Legions on the Saturn, but it looked pretty cool. I think the one thing that Sega did right with that game, was keeping it as a 2D platformer, since the transition to the PS2 wasn't that good.

As for ports of the old games, aren't a few of them already available on the Wii store? Plus, there's the emulators that you can download for free, to play the games. Personally, I'm more interested in Sega just continuing the franchise with new games, since Shinobi's been out in the dark for too long.
