A thought that hit me last night as I was browsing the show your shelves section...how the hell am I going to display this?

I was planning on getting a detolf when the time comes to but thats not going to work... :)

Get 2 detolfs leave a side piece of glass out and join them up :)

Haha good idea but is that even possible? :p

It's possible, but it's going to significantly alter the performance of the cabinet - definitely NOT recommended. The sides are the most important panels for structural integrity and I'm sure the suggestion was meant to be humorous.

The bottom line is you're not fitting the speeder in a Detolf unless you want to place it near vertical taking up the height of almost two shelves.

Didnt really think he was serious :)
Good thing I have a while to plan my display options.

Or you can get two Detolfs, set them together and display your bike on top of them. Just my two cents.

I've actually seen it done online. The guy used a custom piece of glass for the back, locked the top and bottom wood piece into each other, left out the meeting side glass pieces and it appeared to work great. Only improvement i would add for the bike, long 6mm thick custom shelves to fix the gap between the original shelves, where to two detolfs meet.

Yeah, making essentially a new wider cabinet will work. Even nicer is also leaving out the middle set of rails (at least cutting the horizontal and front off) and using new wider glass shelves. The important bit is that the sides of the new top and bottom are well supported when their rails are under tension. That's not what I was referring to in my previous post. ;)

Here's a nice build with a brand new custom top and bottom - he kept all the rails because not buying custom glass was the whole reason for the undertaking:

A great Ikea Detolf modification!

Taking it to the next level, you could buy a few more Detolf units and make a very wide cabinet using wood on the back instead of the original glass, and then using the original glass side pieces as shelves, two of the backs saved for use as the new sides and the others for some fixed panes on the front to avoid having it all doors.

No, i believe he left the middle set of rails in place. One, to support the original shelves and two, to control the tension in the centre where the doors would meet.
The use of the rails where the two detolfs meet would'nt hinder any of the internal shelf space required for larger items.

Right. It just 1. looks ugly. 2. over-tightening the middle front can bow the wooden top.

At some point the best approach is to suck it up, find a better supplier and make something from scratch. Or just buy something like a Besta if you want to go to IKEA.

That detolf mod looks great, might be something even I could manage.

In the enda I will probably go for a Besta with doors.

Yep, or just buy something like this, but is equal to the cost of about four detolfs over here. SC20150103-075704.jpg
We pay more for a detolf in Australia, than you guys in US and Canada. Unit price of one here around 140AU, i think you pay about 70 or 80 US if i'm not mistaken.

Funnily, when I search for glass display cabinets I get a disproportionate amount of results from the UK and second, Australia. You guys must have a great market for this hardware. :)

4x the price of a Detolf for the unit pictured is a great deal IMO - especially if it comes wired with lights.

That Detolf custom is great. This being said, For the price of custom pieces and time spent on the project, i think you can find a similar cabinet on the market.

Here Under is a combination of IKEA Besta shelf units and RETIF economy line Glass cabinets

Something like that here in Canada or the US would be about $1500-$2000 (USD) retail plus the IKEA parts.

I wasn't really joking though more thought into it was required then in my post. I've thought of creating a mega detolf by making new bases big enough for 2 detolfs with the side panels turned 90 degrees so it would almost be 3 detolfs with 2 doors and middle side panel so you'd still have the support from the side panel, though new shelves might be required , so for the price of 2 you get almost 3 with the option for longer shelves.

Just a thought I had a few years back :p I think I even posted a drawing in the moded detolf thread in show your shelves area of the forum

This setup cost me about €750 (USD 900) and it's about 2.40m wide / 2.20m high. No lighting included though.

Sometimes it pays of to be "pushy" and nag retailers about putting stuff up for P.O :)

The store I used has raised their price by about 23 dollars and the other local retailer has just put this up for about 58 dollars more.

I wonder when this will actually be released. I know the product page says July but I'm betting it gets pushed back. I'm curious to see how the final product will turn out. I'm still trying to talk myself into not getting one.
