Bad news....I like Christopher Young (Hellraiser is his best work) but they BETTER use the Spidey themes from parts 1 and 2....

I heard songs from the new SM3 soundtrack (coming out on Tues). It's not very good at all...

Wha... when ... where... THE FLAMING LIPS ARE ON THIS SOUNDTRACK AND I HAD NO IDEA!!!!!????!!!

what is this world coming too. :(

I'd like to get the Special Edition just to hear the exclusive Flaming Lips version of the Spider-Man theme, but it's $45! :monkey4

I'm not a big fan of rock compilation soundtracks, but there are some good groups on this one.

All the themes from Spidey 1 and 2 are in place. Chris Young added new themes for Venom and since he's is known for his horror scores, you know you are in good hands.

I'm not surprised Elfman didn't return. In fact, I'm surprised he came back for SM2. He's stated in past interviews that he doesn't like to score sequels of films he scored original. Batman Returns was a rare exception, according to him.

Plus, I read that he and Sam Raimi were at odds with each other during the last film.

I heard the same thing about Elfman and Raimi.

There's no denying Elfman's written some fantastic scores over the years but I wasn't sure about his score for Spider-Man.

Somehow it felt a little too "Batman", but I'm not knocking his overall work one bit, somehow you seem to just know when Elfman's involved in a project, he has a very distinctive style and I don't think I can say that about anyone else in his profession.

I love Elfman's work, but I wasn't a big fan of the original Spidey soundtrack - too derivative of his other stuff.

I'd read that there was one track in Spidey 2 where Raimi kept demanding he make it more like the temp track they were using (which was Young's work from Hellraiser) and Elfman balked at just copying another composer and he and Raimi really fell out over it. They ended up getting Young to finish the soundtrack for 2, IIRC.

I agree. It sounded too familiar and too close to other scores.

However, the same can be said about John Williams at times. With him, it's in the subtle nuances that you can hear recycling of his other scores, so it's not nearly as noticeable or irritating.

The score album hasn't been announced yet. The compilation album is out there, and it's so-so. I like a few tracks -- the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Flaming Lips, and a few others. Most are a wash, though.

On the other hand -- I got to see Spider-man 3 at a press screening this Friday, and I really enjoyed what Christopher Young did with the score. Not only is he utilising all the relevant Elfman themes, he adds strong material for both Sandman and Venom. And he does it intelligently [ultra minor spoilers ahead] -- the opening credits begin with a recap of the first two movies, and as the elements from the third one (black goo, sand) begin to creep into the credits design, he segues into the new thematic material.

On top of that, the orchestrations are somewhat more lush this time around, although Elfman's signature spidery sound is kept intact. And Young even writes very coherent action-music cues that actually feel carefully structured.

So when you compare all this with what John Ottman did with the John Williams legacy in Superman Returns, Young's achievement is easily superior. (As is only right, since S3 is an easily superior film to SR.)

Oh, and as far as I remember, Elfman actually had a falling out with Raimi over the replaced cues in S2, and that was the main reason he quit this time, to be replaced by the guy who wrote those replacement cues.

FYI,

Christopher Young did a TERRIFIC job scoring the movie. All of the "themes" are indeed there and he came up with some great new ones.

I loved the "dark spidey" theme. ;)
