Any tips for a complete beginner?

I skateboarded in my teenage years (goofy stance) but the more I read up on it the more I am leaning towards regular. Although I would likely go duck-footed for my positioning so I could switch easily.

Would love any tips from snowboarding freaks out there: from gear to type of board to general basics.

You'll love it, just pay attention to the instructor, or whoever your learning with :wink1:
Snowboarding is one of the most fun things you can do :woo

Where are you headed?

Be ok with falling down for awhile. It'll click all of a sudden and you'll be good to go, but the falling will happen frequently before you do.

Thanks!

I'm going to St Anton in Austria. :)

Thank you! My brother has also advised me of this. :lol

Yup, the first couple times be prepared to fall on your ass quite a lot, but you'll get the hang of it, snowboarding is easier to learn compared to other snow sports, but relatively harder to advance in. As far as types of boards/gear you want, it may take a while to find what you like. (think skateboards in terms of concave etc.) You can get a shorter, park board. A longer board with curved edges for cruising and speed, etc. or just an all around decent board that can handle lift line runs and powder. If I was you, I'd rent my first couple times (maybe even the first season) until you decide exactly what your style is.

Take some brews for the lift! :duff

Good decision! It sucks to go in blind to an expensive sport and buy what you think you'll need, especially when your heading to a place that looks like it offers a bit of everything.

Make sure the rental dudes know what they are doing, or aren't being lazy when setting you up. Make sure they give you a proper sized board (don't let the length of the board hit any further up then your nose) and don't be afraid to let them know if the binding's angles aren't comfortable, make sure your ankle and toe edges on the bindings don't grab the turf, just some basics when renting. :)

If you don't already have good abs I'd only plan a half day for your first trip on the Mountain...getting up off your ass repeatedly is a Core crusher! if yer in good shape, take a looong lunch and drink a few 1516's (and have one for me) before getting back on the slopes! Have fun!

Thanks. I actually have very good abs (unexplainably!) so should be OK but thanks for the tips.

Definitely taking your tips for that beer as I am a proper beerhound! :duff

T-bars can be tricky for first timers. If any of the runs have them where you're going maybe avoid them on the first day.

Have a great time Snake, snowboarding is a lot of fun :)

Go skiing:lecture

Tried and didn't like it a few years ago because the boots hurt too much. For some reason, a buddy of mine and I had the itch to try again late last winter and after going two more times, I'm hooked and can't wait until I can start again this season.
