I am not sure if you guys noticed a disturbing trend lately. But it seems nowdays the SS premium format statues lose almost 30% of their value very quickly as soon as they came out. Many of them lost that much while still in pre-order even before it's shipped. Obviously there are some exceptions like the darth vader statue etc.. But for most, if you look at ebay for some of the premium format statues, you will notice a lot of them are selling at well below the original price, it's especially disturbing since many of them came out years ago and were soldout. I am really not sure why, since those suppose to be true collectibles not some hasbro junk, and should increase in value over the years not lose value.

The only reason i can came up with is sideshow over doing them, for example instead of making 1 PF lord of the ring, they make 10 different versions, same goes for star wars etc..

Certainly we all buy them to keep and display as collectors, but it definitely gives me pause to continue pre-order them when almost 80% of the PF statues i can buy for far cheaper on ebay after they are released in 6-12 months.

I cancelled the captain america pre-order but still have the stormtrooper and gollum on pre-order. What sideshow did behind our back to make new copies ("International versions") for the gollum after it was sold out really pissed me off, but i like the statue too much to cancel the pre-order. Could probably get it off ebay for <$250 after it was released though, oh well.

Thats just rubbish that you can buy almost 80% of the statues far cheaper 12 months later.

And if your main concern is higher resell value, stick to the more iconic movie characters like the Boba Fett's, Arnie's Conan/T-800, James Bond, Indy, etc.... that tend to skyrocket.

Studies have been done you know. 60% of the time Sideshow products go down in value every time.

Indeed. I honestly don't know why there are still people who actually buy and collect figures for investment purposes. Can't you just work to get a better job? Actually enjoying a hobby is far more beneficial than a few more hundreds here and there.

it all depends on what piece it is. my LOTR Berserker and Lurtz are still worth a good penny. those guys aren't going down. it all depends.

My primary line is Marvel and the value completely depends on the statue. Look at all of the core-character PFs and you will see big price increases; heck, you can even look at some of the new PFs like Wolverine, Gambit, and Ms. Marvel and the price is going up. Once Cyclops and Rogue come out, Wolverine and Gambit will increase more.

Ya whether it be Marvel or anything else, it's hit and miss with these statues. It all depends on supply and demand and how popular it is. Spidey comiquette is not that old and look how popular it already is and climbing in $$$. Others like the Conan: The Prize was another that could be had a while after it was released and now the price is crazy on it. The market works in weird ways sometimes.

Recent sales:
Darth Talon for $500
Gambit for $700
Doom for $1800
Lurtz $787
Mummy $999

Seems pretty healthy to me. But buy what you like - that way you'll never be disappointed in the secondary market prices.
