I am looking to get a little bit more into the world of Star Wars. As much as I like the movies, I always feel like I am missing a lot of information. Can anyone suggests some essential Star Wars novels, that would make watching the movies more enjoyable? I am looking for non-EU novels.

Thanks

I think the book that starts after Jedi is called the Truce at Bakura or something. If you can find that book it tells you in the cover all of the other ones.

Well really any of the novels not based on the movies are EU. SO I guess your out of luck. :lol

I would suggest reading the novels based on the movies. Also Cloak of Deception, Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter, Labyrinth of Evil, and the Dark Lord: Rise of Darth Vader. Those tie into the movies pretty well.

Yoda: Dark Rendezvous
Is a good one i hear.

But yeah it's all kinda EU unless it's based off the movie.

That's what I meant acutally! Any books that tie into the movies or are based on the movies.

Josh has some pretty good recommendations there. Generally speaking the PT EU seems to be better liked than the post OT. I'm really loving the current Legacy of the Force novels, but you may be a little lost getting in to those without reading some of the other EU books, plus since they build on the older (not as good) books there are some elements that are a little bleh. A couple other things you may like is the Darth Bane books, they've been well recieved (I think even by those who dislike the EU) and they're set 1,000 years before the PT so I think that distance from the movies helps them. They are Path of Destruction and Rule of Two, both written by Drew Karpshyn. A final recommendation is Death Star by Michael Reeves and Steve Perry. I haven't read it, but since it chronicles the Death Star more than an expansion plot you may enjoy it.

you need to decide what part of the time line you want to read more about, whether it's between Ep. 1-3 or Ep. 4-6...or some books in between. i would decide that and then start on those.

i picked up the second Darth Bane book that just came out but when there isn't a new novel about the prequels i read the New Jedi Order books.

btw if you want to understand what a bad a$$ mo-fo Mace Windu is pick up Shatterpoint it's between Ep 2 and 3.

if you don't read the novels in between the movies or even the books about the movies themselves you are missing a lot of good stuff since the books can let you in on what the characters are thinking/feeling, etc. and the movies cannot.

look on the first few pages of a Legacy of the Force paperback book and it will show the timeline and where each book is at.

Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader is the best novel out there (excepting the excellent ROTS novelization).

I've read the Han Solo trilogy and , although a bit tedious at times, it gives some good background info on Han's life from a young boy right up to the start of ANH.

Shadow Hunter is also a great book dealing with Maul :maul and as mentioned Dark Lord is a great book too.

There was some lady selling about 20-25 of the SW hard cover novels at a swap meet I went to a little while back. I asked how much, she wanted $10 each!!! I quickly left. I was going to see if I could pick up lot for maybe $50 and sell on Ebay, or even offer here. Are these popular? What would you expect them to go for if used? So basically, what I'm asking is, what's the collectibility factor?

I have to many other unfinished books to start a new line.

I wasn't too interested in any of the books but I read Dark Lord and loved it and now I am about half way through Labyrinth of Evil with Cloak of Deception next up... and now a lot of other good ideas.

I'm currently three chapters into "Death Star" which I got as I really like the books that provide insight into the already existing items we're familiar with. This is why I really enjoyed the "Tales" line (Cantina, Jabbas's, etc.). Some of the stories are a wee bit goofy, but for the most part, their rather good. Again, nice insight and back story. I tend to stick with the original Trilogy timeline and those books closely before and after.

The only person who would likely pay much for a Star Wars book in hardcover is someone who wants a hardcover and not a paperback. All the paperback ones are still in print for 8.00 or less and alot of the hardcover ones are probably available too. Especially the more recent ones (recent being the last 7 or so years at least.) but even there you could sell them for more than you paid and less than they are selling for a make a profit.

I forgot about the Republic Commando novels. I really love those. If you like Clones or think you may be interested in the Mandalorian culture you'll probably like them too.

I forgot about Tales From Jabba's Palace. I read that in anticipation of getting my SS Jabba. Lots of interesting background stories about the characters surrounding the slug on a slab.

I really liked the New Jedi Order series, although it's very EU. Just getting into Legacy of the Force, and I really need to get the second Darth Bane book.

I'm really ticked off that they canceled the Darth Plagueis book though, that would have been really good.
