Well thats because the oceans in FL are buffets for sharks . I have surfed for maybe 15 years and have never had an issue. I have seen smaller reef sharks in Hawaii but they seemed like they were more scared of me then I was of them.

As far as the swimmer I think he is crazy, but the Bull Sharks are the last of his worries in that river.

Honestly Bull sharks are very misunderstood creatures. They have a tendecy to be around murky cloudy waters and rivermouths. They are not normally prone to attack humans, but there have been some areas where they have been the cause of many deaths, but lots are due to outside factors. I remeber watching this thing about them where a place in South America was having lots of attacks but it was in a murky beach, near a river mouth, which had a cattle processign plant on it and they had been dumping waste in the water. You have to remember sharks have poor vision so most attacks are due to mistaken idenity, and if they were out to attack they would eat the humans but most the time they bite and the humans die due to bleeding out after the shark realizes that the human was not what it thought it was.

Well, he's 52 and this is the second time he has done this sort of craziness (he's trying to break his OWN record)... sooo, something tells me he wouldn't miss his manhood all that much. Doubt it gets much use if he's willing to risk his life like this. He would probably just try to swim the Nile to get over the grief...
