This may be old to some but I figured I post it for those who don't know this little gem of a trick.
Nothing screams inexpensive kids toy more than that super ultra glossy plastic that toy companies love to use.
That glossy mass of plastic just looks like play school toys in the baby section.Gundam modelers for years have been covering up all that shine with Matt flat finishes.
Here's why....

1. Taking that gloss plastic to a flat coat makes the toy look more premium and high end. Like a model.
2. The toy takes on more shadow details and reflects less light exposing all those hidden details and panel lines.
3. The Matt coat covers the plastic and hides scratches...blemishes... and uneven paint..creating a finer even finish.
4. It preps the toy for washes and weathering details as these surfaces are better for customizing...if you so desire.

Not sure how this will show up in these photos...but in my hands ...these droids look 100x better...
So grab a can of acrylic dull coat and make those droids look killer....

Nice!

Which toys are these? The scale is darn near perfect between them.

Electronic interactive r2d2...thinkway.
Electronic BB8 from Disney...
Yea the scale is scary accurate..... Love these!!!

Two different manufacturers and the scale is that good?!

That is a little scary.

If only there was a Threepio to complete the set. Maybe Jakks Pacific will come out with something. They have various lines of large Star Wars figures.

Thanks for the info.

Those are basic scale modeling techniques that can be applied to these many pieces.

Dry brushing, washes and airbrush weathering will work here as well. The key is to not go over-board with any of these techniques. Just when you think "...just a little bit more..." Stop! :wink1:
