Re: Tamashii Soul of Chogokin C-3PO & R2-D2

I own the HT and it's a really great figure, a couple of issues notwithstanding (already mentioned in both threads, we know what they are).

But the Tama looks like a beautiful piece and it's tempting. By photos alone it looks a little more detailed in the body, the tilt angle in tripod mode looks excellent, and in some shots the dome looks spot on in terms of shape -- that sort of elongated ellipse shape. In others is does look more spheroid, but who knows? Lens distortion is hard to get around.

Every time I think maybe I should check out the Tama, I walk by the HT and I'm struck by how it looks like it rolled off the screen.

Maybe I'll have to do an in-hand comparison in the end, but it's a very tough call for sure. What I do agree with is those that say it pairs best with Tama Threepio -- both being squeaky clean and idealized.

The Tama body seems too long to me, not sure about shape of he doe Z. It’s got a lot of accuracy on other details though.

Between different models used during filming, and lens distortion, the girth on the Tama is (probably) debatable. I know stormtroopers better than astromechs, so maybe someone can correct me.

The angle on the HT can be adjusted very slightly if you don't engage the centre leg fully -- it stays just fine. I'll have to do some photo comparisons tomorrow.

I knew the Tama dome was reminding me of something. The sculpt is off and once you see it you can’t unsee it.

Today from Bluefin. They just threw R2-D2 in a box so the corner got a little dented. :( Other than that, I love them. And yes the rivets are so tiny in person they are hardly noticeable.

I'm not too crazy about the bases. C3P0 comes with some white block piece that fits onto the back. It really adds nothing to it. I need a base that they can both stand on together.

The restraining bolts need to be touched up a bit, IMHO. Not enough black details. But then again, the only time they had them was when they were beat all to heck. If these weren't so expensive, I'd definitely take a crack at weathering them.

I just got home to a waiting R2 on my porch. I love this thing! The lights are really nice, & bright, & the sound is a nice touch too. Love weight of it! & I thought the rivets would bug me, but in person.... they don't. & he looks great next to 3P0!

I'm using some old SS stands I got off eBay. The stand that came with 3P0 did not have the holding stability that this piece needed. 3P0 actually fell off the shelf I had him on, a few hours after I got him. The thud he made on landing was huge! Thank God I still had the shipping box under the shelf with all the packing. That saved him from shattering on the floor.

Looks good,

and yeah it’s crazy the garbage stand the 3PO came with. I was to afraid to use it from the get go. I’ve always had mine on a Hot Toys dynamic stand since day one.

You're not using it correctly then. The plastic clips go around his mid section under the chest piece. Unless I'm not seeing something, mine is locked in good and won't tip over.

I prefer a crotch stand for mine. I too used the old round SS stands. I actually cut out a quarter moon piece from one so they come together better. I’m moving this weekend so I’ll post pics once I get them set back up.

Same here. The stand is pretty good in terms of security.

so I already received the Hot Toys R2-D2.

I have posted some photos on the HT R2 thread. It looks great with the Tama 3PO.

My biggest issue now is the light system. There are several mistakes with the proyectors lights, not just one, the 3 proyectors have to be on at the same time, and you need them in order for the rest of the lights to be on. Also, the regular rythm of the light and blue lights blinking at the front of the dome is too toyish for a collectible like this.

But honestly, apart from those issues... I am loving the HT R2.

Let's see when the Tama arrives, what I can say...

I find the red/blue eye too bright on the Tamashii R2. Also the LED bulb of the eye is too obvious. They should have put a frost lens inside to filter the brightness and hide the LED bulb like found in the SS & HT. The illumination on the SS & HT R2 is more correct. Also, Tamashii's dome shape is a bit off. So there goes the "perfect". Because none of the three are perfect. However, all three have their own pros and cons. The HT's dome is a sure winner plus the weathering. While the SS R2's accessories are nice especially the magnetic retraining bolt. Then the Tamashii's body and legs are best among the three.

As seen below, the LED on the eye are pretty obvious.
