is yours all jacked up or something? my panasonic viera plasma kicked ass right out of the box.

I would find an independent ISF calibrator instead of going through Best Buy. I haven't heard anyone say anything good about their calibration techs as they usually aren't as thorough as a real ISF calibration tech.

I haven't had my set professionally calibrated but have used a calibration Blu Ray to dial it in closer to ISF standards.

They list calibration settings for a lot of tvs but usually it is only higher end models.
I bought a new tv recently and I just use the pre set modes but have tweaked each one a little to my liking.
Also Disney put out a Blu ray disc called WOW: World of Wonder which is suppose to be pretty good at helping you to calibrate. I have it on order but have not received it yet.

Geek Squad- $200, worth it or is there a way to do it yourself?

IMO, worth it if you are really serious about getting the absolute BEST picture out of your set as possible. It may not even be noticeable to the average person's eye though since it has more to do with having proper contrast ratios, brightness, RGB, etc....as well as optimizing the sets special features.

You CAN get calibration DVD to do it yourself but that can only get you so far really.

Geek squad or any other professional service will use much more than a DVD to calibrate your set.

Tru dat.

As a matter of opinion, I wouldn't use/trust Best Buy for professional service of any kind, not even to wipe my ass.

I never calibrated my 52" Pioneer Plasma, but I'm thinking if I did pay someone to do it they probably could make it look slightly better.

Good thread, I'm interested to see what people's opinions are.

Any Disney DVD has good enough calibration on it for me. Pop one in and there you have it. :rock

I would be surprised if it is actually Best Buy doing the calibration and they don't hire out to other people but your location may vary. I think in my area they hire our local ISF calibrators.

If you want the best picture possible, get it ISF calibrated. They go into the actual service menu of the TV to calibrate and don't use the standard settings of the TV.

Also remember that some of the services Best Buy provides are not done by the Best Buy employees you see in stores. Best Buy has gone and bought up a lot of companies to expand its services. I know one example is they have a Geek Squad for Businesses and it not the guys you see in stores, they were a company that did full Business computer/network consultation and installs. They also will hire outside contractors for area they don't have the people to do this.
