I loved this show as a kid, so many great characters that are still relevent for todays children.

Big Bird
Bert and Ernie
Elmo
The Count
Grover
Etc, etc.

It taught me my ABC so I would just like to say Happy 40th Sesame Street, and here's to another 40 years

Hard to believe that this has been on for that long. Even harder to believe that good quality products from it are amazingly scarce, especially replicas of the characters themselves. One day I'll own a Grover......one day.

Elmo was after my time.

I guess I came in at the beginning of Sesame Street, though I did not know it. I am about to turn 45. And when I was in Kindergarten (5-years-old, 40 years ago), I remember that I used to love it when I got home from school, my mom would have a paper plate with 3 pbnj sandwiches on it made on hamburger buns (at my request) on the floor in front of the TV with sesame street on. It was my favorite part of the day. Even at 5-6 years old...I had a crush on Maria.

ahhh .. Maria. So am I the only one that is sad at how Elmo has displaced many of the classic characters? I mean, Elmo in Grouchland cannot hold a candle to Sesame Street Presents: Follow That Bird.

No. You are not the only one. An Elmo-type character existed when Henson was around, but he was a background monster, not some over-exposed, baby-talking jerk-off of a character.

I don't care what you lot say, I love Elmo

He actually pops up in the windows when Big Bird returns to Sesame Street at the end of the movie. Word is Lucas is in the crowd scene too.

I wish I were a muppet!
So say we all. I would like to be Dr. Teeth.

In the recent Daytime Emmy Awards broadcast they celebrated the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street. The creators of the show are really eccentric and pretty cool people. The guy who performed Big Bird and still does Oscar is about 90 years old, but still very funny and spry.

The guy who plays Elmo never smiles - he's a very serious guy and very professional - he doesn't mess around at all. Kind of the opposite of what you'd imagine.

Is there anyone who wasn't raised on Sesame Street? Watching old clips bring back a lot of great memories.

See, that's what I hate about Family Guy - just referencing something is NOT comedy. They just replicate the sequence with Stewie in the ball, no satiric commentary or any other reason except for viewers to say - "I recognize that! Nice waste of 30 secs Seth!"

Yeah the Pinball song we all sung that at school
I also liked the bakers 10.
The Baker dude always dropped the food at the end.

The Voice of the baker was Jim Henson himself
