I have not watched this in ages, but I didn't think they were aliens? I thought they were "AI" on the next level far into the future and that they fixed the kid to learn about the past of the earth.

Just looked it up. Looks like you're right. Totally didn't get that when I saw it. Guess that makes it marginally better, but it would have touched me and stuck with me only if it had ended at the Ferris wheel.
