I'm curious......how does generic sound? I hear that comment alot these days.
Well... since you ask...
But first, let me tell you that I like uniqueness and creativity in a band, before virtuosos or technical productions... don't get me wrong, I appreciate a great music player or singer, but I'd rather listen to music that pushes the envelope and is something refreshing and unique, even though it might be obviously based on pre-existing styles.
A lot of bands or singers suffer of this... they have a very powerful sound and are great music players, but, with no creativity sound-wise, because most of them are afraid of experimenting new sounds or rhythms...
some do, like NIN for example... but if you listen to a movie soundtrack for example, 9 out of 10 songs fall into the generic category... filler music, with no personality or uniqueness... sure, people might like the lyrics and enjoy banging their heads to the song... but that's it!
It's like going to an art show, you'll see a lot of lame "paintings" and a few unique ones!
Same thing with pop music for example... the records sound amazing, and they might be terrific singers, but their songs are lame and nothing new... once you've heard one, all of the other ones are the same!
Generic, really? I know they're basically a Bruce Springsteen cover band but I don't know to many rock/punk bands that sound like that. To each it's own is one of my favorite sayings, so points for you for saying it.
Meh, to each its own.
