Depends on which film you want the whip from, how much you are willing to spend and if you are actually gonna use it or just let it set on the wall as a display.

David Morgan made most of the whips used in the original trilogy, but the screen used ones in Crystal Skull were made by Anthony De Longes (sp?). For a 12 plait 10ft kangaroo hide whip from one of these guys you're talking between $600 to $900. Nobel does offer a replica for much cheaper, but I don't think it's built to withstand alotof actual use.

If your looking for an actual full size whip, no one is better than Joe Strain:

If your looking for a mini 1/6 scale whip, again, there is Joe strain, and I am VERY impressed with the work I see on this site from Sovereign Studios, they kick #@*!

OK, so here it goes:

First 3 movies, whips made by David Morgan (all Awesome!). He does NOT make whips anymore, he has trained people at his company (I think the lead person is Meagan?). They are different from the whips for the first three films (the handles are much shorter - if you don't believe me, pause the DVD and look).

KOTCS: The hero whips were made by Terry Jacka, and they are also Awesome! Joe Strain whips were used by the stunt team and can be clearly seen on the Blu-Ray.

If you want a KOTCS, go with Jacka, and go with him directly:

For the most accurate Raiders (accurate meaning: color, braiding, thickness), and all other whips from the first 3 films, go with Joe Strain. The reason I say this is Joe is open and willing to create around stills from the film, he takes the actual screen used whips color and build very seriously. If you go with a $200. whip from somewhere else, you will regret it. Joe's whips are about $500. to $600. depending upon length (8 ft or 10 ft). Joe is offering a screen accurate Raiders whip for the 28th Anniversary, which is the best whip I have ever seen / used. The modern Morgan whips run $910. Now, if David himself were still making them, I would pay double that to have one from him, but, he no longer makes them. Just for the record, David Morgan is the originator and the Master, I can only hope that one day I can find an original Morgan -- meaning one that he hand made, in an auction somewhere, sometime. Having said all of that, Joe is the best of the best in current times.

One of the stills that Joe based his new Raiders whip on:

And here is the finished product:

Here is one of Joe's stunt whips in action from KOTCS:

<a href="https://s663.photobucket.com/albums/uu359/sparksr_2009/?action=view&current=Picture101.png" target="_blank"><img src="https://i663.photobucket.com/albums/uu359/sparksr_2009/Picture101.png" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

You can tell the difference between the Jacka and the Strain, not just by color, but also by the fact that they look very different and the Jacka's wrist loop is ALWAYS tied in a knot.

Here are the Jacka KOTCS and Strain Raiders next to each other (plus the Strain mini whip version in the center of each):

Hope this helps ...

I can certainly vouch for Joe. I have TWO whips by him and they are amazing. Great quality and amazing look as well. They're really something.

If you like a nice, tight whip then the Strain is for you. It takes quite a while to break them in. Don't get me wrong...they crack right off the bat but are very stiff for my taste. I'd keep my eyes open for an older Dave Morgan on Evilbay as they're going for just a bit cheaper now due to the recession. The Morgan is just so incredibly fluid that you can tell the difference of a Morgan to a Strain almost immediately when they're in hand. If a Morgan is out of your spending limit then I would suggest the Todds (as already suggested) or contact WinrichWhips. He can fill any price point. Just tell him what you want and how much you have to spend and he can tell you what you can get, but he is a whip craftsman with many years experience. I've also heard great things about Bernardo's whips but haven't followed any of his threads at COW. His stuff looks fantastic tho.

Whatever you decide stay away from the Noble. It's just a showpiece. And also keep in mind that you have to take care of your whip at least twice a year if you want it to last. It's just dead skin and needs to be treated to last. Any true whip artist will also tell you they're supposed to be used at least infrequently to add years to them. They don't do well hanging on the wall. They love to be used and they show you with years of good care.

If you want a REAL whip, I would not suggest Todd's Costumers if that is who you are referring to. Todd does some good work but his stuff is for visual look...he himself has stated that though his whip does crack, it is mostly for costume. It WILL break down quickly.

The Indy whips are made of REAL kangeroo leather and if you plan to crack it around, get the real deal...you're better off spending the extra cash. Keep in mind that you WILL hit yourself. I whipped myself plenty of times learning the various cracks. So you may want to wear some safety gear.

Dave Morgan does not make whips HIMSELF that often as far as I know. Most, if not, ALL of the whips coming out of his shop are made by his top apprentice and students.

Bernardo Del Carpio (out of Peru) is another whip-maker I would recommend. He is very cool and a good guy (yes he does speak perfect english) and has actually traveled the US visiting some of the local whipmakers (including Dave Morgan) to sharpen his skill. I have one of his "KotCS" style Indy whips and it's beautiful.

Joe Strain ... because they are actual braided replicas.

Check out his website:

I can't find any information about the 1/6 scale whips on his website. How much does he charge?

You will have to e-mail him in that case. It's a special order. Don't be surprised if it costs more than the actual whip!

Do you guys know anyone else who makes 1/6 whips? I would ask Shawn, but he seems to be a bit overextended right now.
