Re: THERE BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
my short/mini review of the album:
That Was Just Your Life
-It's a good opener, reminds me of the way Battery starts. It has a really fast riff as the base riff. It's an alright song, the best part is at 4:30 where this kick ass riff kicks in. A bit to fast for me in general though.
The End of The Line
Reminds me of Harvester of Sorrow in the beginning. Pretty good song I like it better than the opener, also fast but not as fast. Has a similar sound to the first song. There is a quiet clean guitar part toward the end. Nothing special.
Broken, Beat and Scared
Great song up until the chorus. Lars really ruins the song with way too much double bass in the chorus, plus the chorus sounds like it has a lot going on. It could have been a great song.
The Day That Never Comes
This song has actually grown on me and it is actually the first song on the album in order that stands out. It has a lot of distinct riffs and sounds completely different than the other songs. Track 1-3 all sound similar and don't really have any memorable riffs or lyrics, but this song does. Plus the last half is really good with all its twists and turns. Very catchy. Metallica did chose a good single especially for the modern music listener.
All Nightmare Long
The beginning reminds me of Enter Sandman or something, for about 30 seconds and then this hard/fast riff kicks in again. It is almost like the previous track (TDTNC) was recorded at a different time than this session as tracks 1-3 and 5 sound very similar and 4 does not (which is possible since they recorded the album over a 2-3 year period :?). It is another fast song but I don't find anything special about it, I was bored by this song.
Cyanide
A very well constructed song. It is one of the best songs on the album if not the best. Damn good song. Memorable and it doesn't get boring and I can see it becoming one of Metallica's greatest song and be up there with MOP, etc.
The Unforgiven III
Sounds nothing like Unforgiven I or II, the word Unforgiven is not used at all. Though James does say forgive and forgiven in the song. Although I am disappointed that musically it does not fit in with UF I and UF II, it is a really good song. Has a progressive feel to it. Starts off with a slow piano and then goes into a clean riff and then it kicks in like UF I did. The chorus and verses are really good, really a great song and also one of the best on the album. This might be my favorite song on the album.
The Judas Kiss
A lot of Metallica fans are praising this song. It's not my favorite, its alright. The main riff is really cool, but other than that its alright.
Suicide and Redemption
This is an instrumental song. A very good one too. I give Metallica credit on this, they created a well structured and diverse 10 minute instrumental that keeps you on the edge of your seat and not bored. I do hope they play this live.
My Apocalypse
A fast thrash song, not my cup of tea. I don't really care for it, at that though it is a weak song to end the album with.
Final Thoughts: A pretty damn good album by Metallica. It would live up the expectations I say. And I think it will definately be well received by the masses of Metallica fans and easily become the favorite Metallica album for lots of people. I recommend for you to get the album, especially if you are a Metallica fan.
