Over the past couple weeks i decided i'd try sculpting and see how it goes. I've never sculpted before so id like some feedback from the people on here about my first try. Im trying to make The Dude, its not done but i think im close to done with the face. Let me know if you think it looks remotely like jeff bridges or how i could go about making it look more like him, thanks.

With all honesty I would say practice drawing , at least 2 hours daily, learn bone anatomy, the anatomy of the skull, facial muscles... use a mirror... for reference, and never, never ever, ever.. add facial hair unless you are 100% sure you are done with the rest of the form of the head... buy a book called... "Modelling and scultping the human figure" by Lanteri, Rodin's teacher.... best $10 dollars ever spent... and never stop drawing, drawing will help you become a better sculptor... sculptors should draw more than aocmic book artists.. according to Lanteri ( he uses the term "draftsman/painter" not comicbook artist, there were non back then ) ... I believe him..... also try to buy a skull, it will help you... we live in an era where everything is at the touch of a button, you can find stuff on ebay that will help you tons!
Hope this helps my friend :)

Much better than my first sculpt.
Can't really crit specifically on the features to make him more like bridge at the moment.
Proportions need some fixing:
Head too wide, head too short above eye brows and long underneath mouth.
Once you fix those you should have a much easier time seeing how the rest should fit together.
You might want to block in some ears to help also.
Keep at it.

BTW I can see Bridges there, great first attempt... the jaws are way too wide... here's some areas that you can finesse... hope this helps!

Wow awesome thanks so much, and thanks to everyone else for the advice.

Hi,

I don't really watch the show so I can't give the best critique on the Jeff Bridge likeness,

but as a fellow sculptor if you're really interested in getting better at the likeness

I'd recommend that after you sculpt this one and think it's "finished",
put it down.
Sculpt some other guys in between with different features,
and then try to sculpt him again from scratch :)
When you sculpt him again, you'll see yourself where you have improved.

In my case, when I first started, I tried a self-portrait sculpt three times in a row and every attempt was a good learning experience.

Can't wait to see more progress of your work,
Daniel

Nice job! Definitely identifiable as The Dude.

And great advice from ZKULPTOR and sunohc.

ZKULPTOR is definitely right abiu the drawing. Before I ever started sculpting I always drew portraits of ppl and you really get understand common features that you typically see in a face so when you start a fresh sculpt you go from common like proportions then you begin the fine work, at least that's how I go at it. But this is definitely a great start for a first attempt and I can definitely see Bridges in there. Keep it up! you can only get better!

Ok i made some changes, i tried to thin the head out a bit and add more to the forehead. Hows this?
