First You Get The Money, Then You Get The Power, Then You Remake SCARFACE All Over Again!

Beaks here...

This movie is like a great big _____ just waiting to get ____ed again and again.

I'm old enough to remember film critics getting up in arms over Brian De Palma's remake of Howard Hawks's 1932 SCARFACE, so I'm not going to condemn Universal Pictures for wanting to return to this evergreen about the taking of the American dream. After all, Hawks's and De Palma's versions are far too indelible to ever be forgotten. According to Deadline's Mike Fleming, the studio has been meeting with writers in hopes of finding a fresh new take on the material. It's unclear from Fleming's article whether the studio has found their writer (and/or director), but it sounds like they at least have an idea of where they'd like Tony to hail from. I sure hope it's outer space.

The new SCARFACE will be produced by Martin Bregman (who also produced the '83 remake) and former Universal chairman Marc Shmuger. I wouldn't be surprised if they skew much younger with this movie (i.e. aim for a PG-13), but we'll see. I sincerely doubt they'll make a film so violent it'll have to be re-edited to avoid an NC-17.

As a HUGE fan of both the Hawks and DePalma films, I'm at a loss. Hip-hop remake with a black Tony dealing crack? Bad idea. Prequel exploring Tona Montana's rise from being a petty crook to assassin in 1960s-70's Cuba? Why not? X-MEN FIRST CLASS and RISE OF THE POTA were the best movies of the summer, so taking unexplored material and filming it with the right director and actor couldn't hurt.

What else is DePalma up to these days?

I can't wait to see those opening week #s. Yeah, the police blotter; 'cause you know that shootings, stabbings and violent acts by wannabee gangstas will be abundant.

Seeing how Usher and all rappers are a big fan of the movie, wont surprise me if he pulls some connections and get the role. He can be Tony and Justin Bieber as Manny :monkey1:lol

Don't ____ with classics, end of ____ing story, jesus man.

I bet this remake will be full of ganster rappers (since they all say they have seen the movie hundreds of times). 50cent and P Diddy or what ever his name is l bet will be in it. P Diddy was in that stupid prequal to the great Carlitos Way. I think People in Hollywood have finally done to much Blow and think this is a good idea.

I now think people in Hollywood with bad remake ideas should also be executed along with people who wear pants around their knees, and this movie will be full of them.
