The U.S. Postal Service plans to stop delivering and collecting letters and other first-class mail on Saturdays beginning Aug. 5, although packages will continue to be delivered.

If they outlawed junkmail there wouldn't be much mail to process at all. Junkmail is probably one of their money makers so I think it would have the opposite outcome: it would cost a ton of jobs and we'd pay more for mailing stuff.

I think they should go the UPS route. M-F and you pay extra for sat. They would still need someone for Sat but one person could cover many peoples routes. I rarely get anything on Sat beside junk mail, actually that's also true for M-F.

Don't care. I never check my mail on Saturdays and any packages I send for come to my office, which I am definitely no where near on Saturdays.

Yep. Its not the quantity of mail that kills them.

For the most part you still have to drive the complete route regardless of whether there is a lot or a little mail, especially considering they have to check every mailbox for outgoing mail.

So the more mail, the more postage, the more income.

If they really wanted to make some $ they would add a surcharge of $10 a month to every mail box whether they have incoming or outgoing mail or not. Kind of like utilities. If you never used a penny for actual gas or water you still get a metering or service charge each month. Why not for your mail box?

Some change had to be made. I just hope they can stay in business, if nothing else, as a check to UPS and Fed Ex, and the potential commercial postal cartel they would create if USPS ever went under.

Well that's the main reason for doing this I think. They are in massive debt, and cutting operations for a day a week will help out with this.

I spoke with my local Postmaster and mail carrier and both said if it means that they get to keep their jobs in the long run, losing one day will be worth it.

I'm cool with that... better for the Post Office workers to keep their jobs than me getting stuff on a Saturday... I can wait a couple more days...

I don't see the big deal, some people are freaking out about this but I rather have them keep their jobs.
