That's an interesting and unique approach for the pose. But I am SUPER happy with the Gandalf maquette that I received today! That meets my Gandalf statue needs at the moment.

I appreciate the fact that Weta is doing LOTR polystone again, but in my opinion, this piece leaves a lot to be desired.

Don't see a real good likeness at all, to be honest.

I'm happy with my SS maquette.

I ordered one. I love it honestly. Its a great looking piece and a great price to boot. Gandalf is my second favorite character behind Aragorn so I'm cool with adding another piece to my collection.

It's nicely sculpted but there is something wrong with the eyes. Too much weed?

I actually don't mind it. I have no interest in it based on the size, but the price is right and the likeness, though certainly not on par with the SS PF or maquette, is much better than the original SSW statue. And while SS was accused by some of simply rehashing the character of GTG with their maquette I do not consider this to be a rehashing at all. Any statue that presents a character in a different light or focuses on a different aspect of that characters personality is not my idea of rehashing....and clearly this statue is focussing on the reflective aspect of Gandalf's personality, something never done before.

I am anxious to hear however, what those who railed at length against SS for producing a Gandalf maquette [concerned that SS was oversaturating the market] have to say in light of this new open edition offering from Weta.......something tells me we won't hear a peep. :lol And as for the guy who stated concerning the maquette...."between the SSW Gandalf the Grey, the one on Shadowfax and the SS Gandlaf the Grey PF, if one can't find an iconic Gandalf that you like, there is something wrong with you."......I wonder if he still holds onto that belief now that there are even more versions to choose from.........somehow, I don't think so. :lol

Not a bad price at all. Cool.

I like this pose better then the Superman pose of the Gandalf maquette. Don't get me wrong the SSM is by far the better sculpt but I just can't get into that super hero pose. This Weta just feels more like Gandalf to me. I don't think I will be buying it though.

Does the world need another Gandalf? I'm not so sure, I have yet to buy there Gollum statue. It does look nice enough, the likeness seems pretty darn good, considering this is around 1/9th scale and you get the scene of Gandalf at the gates of Moria, wondering how the hell to open the door.
One assumes this is the true start of Weta's character line and should it continue and you get the fellowship+ and Weta deliver on production quality, then it will likely do rather well.
Why should it do well, simple, space and money. For those with limited amounts of both, you could fit in a full fellowship in a fraction of the room that the same as PF's would need and if the price point of this is indicative of future pieces, then for the cost of one SS 'Moses' Gandalf statue, you could get 3 and half Weta ones. As someone who had previously stated that the only real reason for slow SS sales was that the 'economy sucked', then from that point of view, Weta has to be on a winner.

Politics aside, this is a very nice affordable piece. A lot better than the average 'trinket' and not aimed at the 'high end' collectors. This is quality LOTR for the masses, if other characters feature captured moments such as this.

Well done WETA :clap

Nicely said! As a sculptor this statue has a calming feeling, the gesture of the arms and hands are great as is the seated posture, and for the size I think it's wonderful... the expression is great too.. the hatless portrait is fun especially where as they have included the iconic hat on the ground between his legs.. Not sure what the dislike is, but we all have our likes and dislikes.. for my money Bravo.. Weta!

It's nice, but i don't know what to make of it or the line overall. It would help if Weta would state whether there'll be a series of statues or just the odd character every now and again.
For the size it is it's quite good, and with an excellent price that hopefully means there'll be a few more to come, but as these are open editions for now i'll hold back on ordering until we hear more about the line.

nice piece but just something off about likeness, frustrating thing is (when you look at previous weta gandalf pieces) you know they can do better

but positively....I love the pose/concept and very well priced IMO

Is Weta going to have a booth at SDCC? I would love to see this and Gollum in person to get an idea what they look like.

Yeah, they will have a booth with Darkhorse. They will have all kinds of stuff there. Check my thread for the #.
