what clay do you guys use to sculpt figures, one that doesn't crack and will work for molding

A lot of sculptors use polymer clays, like Super Sculpey, Fimo, Premo etc..

I recommend Super Sculpey Firm, it costs about 10-15$ for a pound and you can drill, sand and paint it once cured. When you're satisfied with your sculpt you just pop it in the oven for a few minutes to harden the clay. A big change in temperature might cause cracking so it's best to leave it in the oven while it cools down.

ya super sculpey is industry standard. It's what Hollywood uses in movies, so you know it's the best there is.

hI, whats best to soften it back up? I have a whole slap which has gone hard :( went to do some sculpting tonight but don't have a jackhammer :gah:

Super sculpey FTW!
To soften it back up, I just leave it under my desk lamp for about an hour.
Or if I cant be bothered to wait, Ill just play with in my hands for a bit - stretch it out, and roll it like a snake.

The makers of sculpey sell a clay softener that you can buy, they suggest about 6 - 8 drops per 4 oz of clay or 2 - 4 drops per 2 oz clay.

A good alternative is mineral oil, I've also heard people using Vaseline and olive oil but I can't confirm if the properties of the clay are as good as with mineral oil.

Good luck!
