Dusty
just me
I've seen it. Twice. I laughed, I cried, I nearly vomited (not really, but there's one really disgusting scene that's pure awesomeness). And I can't believe that no one has started a thread about this movie yet.
So, who's seen it? What was your theater-going experience like? (not too many spoilers please - don't ruin it for the BORAT virgins)
I saw it first on opening night. We arrived at about 8:30, planning to go to the 10:30 show. Every show on both screens was sold out, so they added a 12:30am showing. We came back at 11:30pm to stand in line. The line stretched around the corner. The theater was really crappy, and there was a tall guy in front of me, so I couldn't read half of the subtitles (during the times when they were speaking Khazakstani... if that's what they were really speaking). It was totally awesome. And I got a cool BORAT pin. The guy's a genius (Sacha Baron Cohen, I mean).
Saw it again last night because my friend hadn't seen it yet, and I didn't want him to have to go alone (besides, I wanted to read the subtitles this time... and did I mention that it is awesome?). Tuesday night, 8:20... got to the theater at 7:45, thinking that would be plenty of time on a Tuesday. SOLD OUT. Went to a different theater. 9:20 showing, got tickets just in time. The line was already halfway to the end of the block. Jeremy Piven ended up sitting next to us. My friend didn't realize it was Jeremy Piven (until I informed him later), and they got in a silent elbow war over the use of the arm rest (in between laughing at BORAT). Classic. It was also very surreal sitting next to Jeremy Piven while viewing the trailer for his new movie (Smokin' Aces - looks like a Guy Ritchie movie rip-off).
The movie itself? Hard to explain. I just love it... a lot. I haven't laughed that hard at a movie since the first time I saw Monty Python and the Holy Grail (for some reason I couldn't stop laughing during the Black Knight scene... go figure). Even if you don't laugh (and if you don't laugh at SOMETHING in BORAT, you must be missing a part of your brain), you've got to admire the sheer balls that this guy has. For those of you who have seen it, I am mostly referring to the rodeo scene. I can't believe he didn't get beat up after that! I was cringing
My favorite scene? Hmmm, that's tough. The gross one (you'll know it when you see it, trust me) is insanely hilarious, and my stomach was hurting from laughing during it. But it's not my favorite. I honestly don't think I can choose one. The whole thing is great - a must-buy when it comes out on DVD.
If you are easily offended, don't go see it. You'll hate it. But if you like to laugh at yourself and at the follies of society and the human race - and if you enjoy shows like South Park - it's a MUST-SEE.
On another note, I'm going to see Pan's Labyrinth at a midnight show tomorrow night during the AFI film fest! :chew
