What was the "IT" figure company before the current "IT" figure company

I started hot toys around around the MMS 40's or 50's, they were no where near as big then as they are now (though their customer service is probably the same) it's gotten so that instead of saying 1/6 people just say hot toys as if it's the entire medium.

So i was wondering... What was the "IT" figure company before hot toys that everyone was talking about and hyping about and occupied that pedestal?

I'm thinking it was probably Neca, McFarlane or Sideshow but aren't sure.

Probably Dragon and 21st Century? Outside of the oldschool vintage Joes, Hasbo's 1/6 has always been meh.

I would agree with Dragon.

I also agree with Dragon...been collecting 1/6th since 2001 or so, shortly before Cy Girls came on the market. 21st C was second tier, not king of the hill.

They didn't just do figures in 1/6 though, they did bikes, jeeps, tanks, helicopters, etc. Some of that stuff, despite being stocked at most every TRU, goes for a bit of $$$ nowadays.

I agree they did a lot of bigger items/vehicles, but they still weren't the same level of quality as Dragon.

Yea while the 21c figures had crap bodies and some of the worst sculpts/paint ever, the vehicles they put out are nice. No one today would every put them out.

21stC got me into 1/6th in 2000. Dragon kept me in it.

Depends what you're talking about in terms of "who was the first big company in 1/6th" or "who got big because of movie licenses first"....

For the latter, Sideshow took off in the early 2000's (Bond for me) and made a huge leap when it got the Star Wars license in 2005. Everything changed. 1/6th got away from military and really took off with movie licensing.

Hot Toys was just a scrappy company back then but eventually took advantage of Sideshow's flaws and raised the bar for expectations and prices many, many times over the last 5 years.
