Hey all,

I'm still a noob here and wanted to start a 1/6 figure collection, and I love GI Joe and Cobra, and thought getting Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow would be cool. However, after looking over pics and what not of both of them, they look kinda frail and don't really look as good as some of the ones Hot Toys put out. My question is, are there any comparisons b/w Sideshow figures and Hot Toys figures? Would most people say the Hot Toys ones are better or the Sideshow ones? I don't know if I buy them and get them and be like, 'why did I buy this'...?

Thanks!

Re: Question Regarding Preferences...?

Yep, both Enterbay & Hot Toys blows away Sideshow.
I think that's common knowledge even on this board...:)

It used to be, well, I don't mind the sideshow quality differences, because
they're only $50-60. But sideshow keeps uping pricing, yet not making a leap
in quality they need to justify it. So I think they're slowly getting less love
as far as 1/6 fans go.

Damn so is it worth it to get Sideshow toys? I'm afraid I'll be disappointed with the quality...

Re: Question Regarding Preferences...?

sideshow does produce some nice stuff.. good for what it is.. but often times they need alot and i mean ALOT of custom work to match hot toy's quality.

If you simply want the best of the best Hot Toys is 100% the way to go. Even Sideshows best figures are often not comparable to Hot Toys. So stricky speaking on quality HT is the best.

But depending on what licenses you are more interested in is a big factor too. Currently Sideshow is only doing G I Joe and Star Wars in the 1/6 scale. Hot Toys has a bunch of random licenses, but you usually only get a couple (or one) figure from each. Terminator/Predator being the exepctions when many figures where released.

Sideshow G I Joe, while not as great as Hot Toys, is currently their best line imo. Very close to HT quality, most lacking in paint apps though. Sideshow does other points of their figures good enough, but their paints apps are light years behind HTs most recent offerings. But Sideshow is also less expensive too.

Buy what you like. If you like Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow, get them. They are worth the money. Frail? Not really. But care needs to be taken with items that cost this much. You are paying for detail.

Thank you that was really insightful! I'm a bit nervous that if I get Sideshow GI Joe I may be disappointed, but since SS has the license I really don't have a choice do I? Lol, thanks again!

The G I Joe line is great. I dont know you, or what your standards or expectations are, but I wouldnt say that would be dissapointed in any of the Joe figures.

And like Evil Face said, they are not frail but should be handled with some care.

Re: Question Regarding Preferences...?

What is Enterbay? Is that another company? They make toys as good as Hot Toys?

I generally split 1:6 scale figures into 3 main categories :

1. Military
2. Movie / TV / Comic
3. Cartoon / illustration / designer

For type 1 figures. Currently you cannot go wrong with Soldier Story or DiD. There were a myriad of other smaller manufacturers that have fairly good quality. Price wise is normally USD80 onwards.

For type 2 figures. Hot Toys are the reigning leader of the pack. Coming close is Enterbay but they are slacking on their current Storm Warriors series of figures. Nevertheless, they have good track records on their earlier release namely their Bruce Lee line of figures. Both these company's figures are usually USD150 onwards.
Of course there are Sideshow toys and Medicom Toys. Sideshow makes mainly Holywood based figures while Medicom is the only guy who made Japanese Superheroes figures. While Sideshow's price is creeping upwards, it is nothing compare to Medicom which starts around USD180 onwards.

For type 3 figures. We have ThreeA currently the rages of these categories. Their figures are not usually available on your everyday-retail-brick n motar-shop but you will need to order them via their online retail shop (bambaland). I am still quite new to this brand and others may be able to give more info on where to get them. ThreeA's prices are affordable (starts are about USD80 onwards)with free shipment.
The other brand that comes to mind are Kennyswork & Brothersworker who sometimes collaborated with Hot Toys. Some pioneer in this category were folks like Michael Lau, Eric Soh etc. These illustrator/designer's figures fetch serious money.

What I have written here is just the very summary of the various brands. You will have to spend some time to explore on your own to get to know them better. Eventually, you know what you like and you can decide how to navigate around to get what you wanted. Hope these helps

I suggest, if you have not, look at both Hot Toys & Enterbays
websites. Then find a store who has Sideshow, Enterbay & Hot Toys and go down and see them.
Get some tactile info to feed your curious brain, that is the only way you will know for sure, what
quality you consider acceptable, to you.

Thanks and goodnight....:thud:

That will be $187.50....please :rotfl:rotfl

They are a company with as much talent as hot toys but just don't have that many licenses outside of Bruce lee/martial arts stuff which they seem to mainly work on ..there head sculpts and paint apps are amazing and there latest license "prison break" license blows any hot toys figures likeness outa the water imo ..but those figures are not out yet so they may not live up to the pictures which can often be the case even 4 hot toys.
O and enterbay are really really slow at releasing there figures ..unlike hot toys.

Blitzway are worth a look 2,there a brand new company and have yet to release there first figure Scarface's Tony Montana ..and just going by that figure i think there going to be a good contender for hot toys and enterbay.

Very helpful my friend, thank you, I will remember this!

And thanks to everyone else for the great info, now I know a little more about the field and can make decisions on what to get. I appreciate everyone's response and help!!! Thanks so much! :clap

If Sideshows GIJOE line "speaks" to you and makes you happy you should get it no matter what anyone else thinks. You will never meet any of us in real life to "critique" your collection. If you must have approval, i can only comment on Storm Shadow. He is a fantastic figure IMHO.

I disagree. Sideshow right now are making nice figures across the board, and are still cheaper than Hot Toys.
