Often, a single film dominates pop culture and is easily remembered as a defining piece of entertainment or artistic achievement for that year. Certain years have more than one film, but even then one stands slightly above the rest.

Joker. But I know Jye is gonna walk in here and say TROS causing a huge uproar lol

Well how bout this one?

Who got shot in the face better, Robert De Niro in "Joker" or

Adam Sandler in "Uncut Gems?"

Seriously man....don't click it....it's such a huge ass spoiler.....don't do it.....don't do it....you know you want to but I'm imploring you not to click it......

I still haven't bothered watching Joker, and Endgame was forgettable. Alita: Battle Angel was the film that defined 2019 for me personally.

I also dont get the hype for Joker. For me, thats a movie that certainly thought it was a lot more clever than it actually was. And I was hyped going in.

I was so happy to see Jojo Rabbit nominated for best picture. That and Once Upon a Time were the clear best movies I saw in 2019, though I did miss a lot of the smaller flicks.

I don’t watch trailers so I never see clips, hear sound bites or create a idea of what this movie is about. I basically press “PLAY” and let my TV (or Theatre) tell me a story. In saying this how do you define a good movie? Is it based entirely on first watch? Should you see a movie twice? Do you see a movie once then go online hear reviews obtain a understanding of the message then go back and rewatch to appreciate the “art” of the production? For example I watched “The Rise of Skywalker” and was very entertained. However since I was entertained by the first viewing I may be bored watching again. Or I also just watch “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” knowing nothing about this movie and how it loosely connected to “Manson Murders” or even who “Sharon Tate” was I thought the movie was pointless and boring. WTF was it about anyway? Now however after listing to reviews and understanding the backdrop (more knowledge) I am interested to revisit and see it again and appreciate each scene.

Putting aside favorite movie of the year -- which seems impossible for some people -- I guess I took the title of this thread to ask "which movie will be remembered as representing 2019 the most"

For me, that will be Joker.

And completely unexpected it was. I was certain it would have been Endgame or TROS. Although I do believe Endgame represents more of an ending to a 10 plan than 'owning' a particular year. For me, IW owned 2018... and that was the end of the MCU for me - 2008-2018.

Correct. It's not about which film is the "best" or your favorite. Some people don't get it. :lol

Having said that, the poll results are surprisingly close. EG came out in early 2019 and seems to have been forgotten already, while Joker might benefit coming out late in 2019, but will all the award talk, the film will continue to generate headlines in early 2020.

Oohhh, looks like I tied it for the Joker...

I think Joker owned the year for a couple of reasons:
1. It's a "serious" movie, that aspires to "elevate" pop-culture beyond its comic-book origins, while Endgame really is "just" pop-culture, a popcorn movie event that has no real resonance
2. From almost every single point of view of crafting, it is a much better artistic endeavour than Endgame (photography, acting, music, editing, directing...) and finally
3. While Endgame touches on "serious" topics (how to deal with loss and grief, the meaning of friendship and sacrifice...), Joker hit a nerve with its look into mental health, disenfranchisement, loneliness and the general disillusionment with the state of the world.

In general, I feel that the discussions the Joker sparked around the globe and in the media are miles ahead and much more profound than anything that Endgame sparked. Endgame is a milestone because it ends a 23 movie, 11 year cycle, but I think that will be its only lasting legacy. I believe Joker is a fundamentally better, more intelligent, deeper movie.

If you're strictly speaking of the calendar year 2019, then the answer is Endgame. The hype for the movie was HUGE .. arguably greater than anything that came before it. Think about how difficult it was to get tickets for it that first morning and how many showings it had for opening weekend. It was well received by critics and fans alike, and did an excellent job of sticking the landing on an 11-year, 23-film experience that has never happened before in the history of cinema, and isn't likely to happen again any time soon. To a lesser extent, the hype continued throughout the summer as it chased Avatar and eventually surpassed it.
Joker dominated the fourth quarter of the year as it passed $1 billion without the help of China, and has definitely carried over more into 2020 due to awards season. It's raw and uncompromising, and stands on its own as a singular cinematic experience. The two films are night and day, but both exceeded expectations, no matter how lofty they may have initially been.
I don't think there's a right answer to this question ... and there definitely isn't a wrong one.

Its almost impossible to know all the time which film will be remembered for its year.

I mean, if its 1977 then yeah Star Wars.... 1989, yeah Batman... but that doesn't happen often.

In 1988, the big movie everyone was talking about was Roger Rabbit. But the year is remembered for Die Hard I believe.

2019 might have that split in time. We'll see which resounds over time.

That and for the foreseeable future it will be #1 all-time box office champ for worldwide total, domestic opening day, domestic opening weekend, and domestic opening week (among a long list of others). And it also had THE most talked about scene (for women) of any comic book movie to date, which in this era is not insignificant (regardless of how we might feel about its quality). It's OK to prefer Joker, but let's not get carried away.
