I love this show , i'm glad it's back
Just over a month ago we learned that thepopular ABC improv comedy series Whose Line Is It Anyway? would be making a return to primetime this summer on The CW. Now we finally have an official premiere date for the revival.
The CW announced that the new iteration of the show with host Aisha Tyler stepping in for Drew Carey will premiere on Tuesday, July 16th with two brand new half-hour episodes, featuring the return of original cast members Ryan Stiles, Colin Mochrie and Wayne Brady.
Following the hour-long premiere, the series will have one new episode each week starting July 23rd, followed by an encore presentation of the same installment.
Here’s an episode from years ago with special guest Robin Williams:
As expected, the show won’t deviate too far from the original formula with the comedians putting their comedic skills to the test through a series of spontaneous improv games, prompted only by random ideas supplied by the studio audience. But as of now, there’s no indication of the special guests that will join the cast in the premiere episodes of the series.
It’s hard to believe that Whose Line Is It Anyway? has been around for over 20 years (going back to the series’ inception in the UK in the late 80s), and yet the show – which exploded in popularity for eight seasons on ABC – still has a big following and fans excited for more laughs. Though many shows have tried to capture the same lightning in a bottle like Thank God You’re Here, the mostly wholesome nature of the comedy for people of all ages made it appealing across the board.
However, now that the series is no longer on ABC, it’ll be interesting to see if the show gets a little more edgy with their content. Personally, I’m hoping the guest stars are much more high profile than they were back in the 90s, perhaps even as exciting as some of the guest hosts on Saturday Night Live.
Either way, the return of the show is exciting, and it just might be one of the more anticipated summer television events.
