MONDO - THE THING

The clothes on this one are just so out of date and poorly tailored, that there's just no use for them. I tried the jacket on another body just to see, and it still doesn't work. This is 2009 era Matty Collector quality. I can already tell the material itself won't last. I'll scavenge the viable parts and heads and use top to bottom different clothing if this one gets displayed. I already started modding another DiD A-2 jacket. For anyone looking for an excellent quality flightsuit, the DiD one from their Top Gun Maverick figure can't be beat.

The DID flight suit is the wrong design, but nevertheless having just tested an old BBI version of the same suit it already looks so much better, even though it misses the zips that are a characteristic of MacReady's.

The colour looks better being a more faded olive than Mondo's darker green, and the extra width at the hems is enough to fold inside itself so that the legs blouse over the boots comfortably. (Mondo's boots are too tight to actually tuck the material inside them).

Ideally he'd have actual lace up boots as well to complete the scruffy look:

As I've written before I really like Mondo's jacket after working on it, which is something I never dreamed I'd be saying.

So, now with the BBI flight suit...

Yeah I was checking out various flight suits on ebay but don't see anything good at the moment. I did order some leather combat boots though to replace those awful plastic ones.

So far I haven't done much but throw it on an old generic body, but it's already made a huge improvement I think.

Already a massive improvement with body swap as expected. The body is 80% of the problem with the Mondo figure

I finally got mine. Have not opened. Those hand pegs look a bit "thin" and easily to break???

Also, what body is recommended that will easily work?

The stock ones are very sturdy, but the hands paint is awful and the pegs are ratcheted with big steps, so you can't fine tune the pose.

Finally, my Top 3. I definitely need to swap the body, to fix the proportions. If the body he came with didn't have such intense neck muscles it would be half bad. I tempered my expectations as everyone got theirs. So in the end I'm happy. I can deal with this, and whatever happens to Roddy from They Live. After that though, I'm out on Mondo unless they do some intense rehauling.

I've searched to try and identify the actual suit, and so far nobody seems to know what pattern it is, or what country it might have come from.

It may have been customised or specially made for the film, taking it's cue from the style worn during the Vietnam War.

In this video they said that the most accurate real word example is the commercially made one called, 'Cotton Rip Stop Pilot's Jumpsuit', which is "almost identical minus the vertically opened waist pocket and buttoned cuffs".

So the chances of finding an off the peg 1/6 example are likely zero.

Maybe a third party company could be tempted....

Mars could add it to their long list of teased figures. :monkey3

It's annoying that Mondo, who had to start from scratch anyway, fell so short. A slightly lighter colour coupled with a bit more volume in the legs and their suit would've become sought after as a parted out item for those building their own MacReady.

(Oh, and faux zips rather than holographic strips!)

I've never spent so long on a figure, or gone back to one so many times to make changes.

I'm currently making yet another change because I've realised that my Magic Cube Book of Eli figure has lace up leather boots that are pretty much identical to MacReady's, even down to the same number of holes. The major difference is the grips are visible on the edge of the soles.

The laces need sorting out - probably water to train them to hang vertically - but the boots are slimmer and more accurate than Mondo's, which remain chunky at the ankle.

I also changed the body again, giving him Magic Cube Eli's since it's slim and the ankle pegs match the boots perfectly. He still works out at about 11.5" above the soles to where the top of his head would be, so still in line with Kurt's 5' 9 1/4" height.

I am making a custom for a second one. I couldn't find any flight suits with the same zipper layouts. If no one pointed out the zippers, I wouldn't have even known it was on him in the movie.

I do notice when watch movies, I tend not to notice clothing details beyond, "he's wearing a brown jacket and green pants with boots."

I notice that's my pattern with watch and making figures. I guess it's a good think as I am like, "close enough to what I saw in the movie."

The Thing is the Mondo figure is what it is. Many have and shall improve the figure, replacing parts. I do not want to spend on it...rather invest in my Western figure tribute. So it may be a no jacket look but not too keen on flight suit tied at the waist. It could be a complete change thing, keep head sculpt replace everything else and create a Kurt Russell going to or leaving the set in 1982. The remaining option....pass it on. Likely to be the latter.

The thing is no one knows including I!

Or you could keep it on shelf after a body swap and just accept it for the good but flawed figure it is. I mean, the 1982 movie was flawed too in many areas but we still love it even if it ain't as polished as a modern movie.

Just enjoy that you finally got a 1:6 Mac, it has been long enough. If I can happily display some 90's Kenner 12 inch figures I can sure as heck display this figure too. I say shift it only if you get a better replacement (custom, third party or officially licenesed).
