I'm sure the movie is about 90% style and 10% story like the first, so I wouldn't expect any plot synopsis to really convey what the movie is actually like to watch.
I know but it’s the ending tho and I’m not going to spoil it but that ending is just so stupid. I’m sorry but it is. It makes everything entirely pointless and not to mention it tried to vaguely connect to something else. It’s just not it. Infact the other ending that crows told me about sounded better than this.
This movie really seems to be like a giant middle finger. I’m serious lol.

Everyone interprets things differently. I think you have to see movies yourself before you can draw any conclusions. Some people love certain movies and others hate them. But yes I agree it doesn’t sound great on paper.

I enjoyed it.

I don't think Lada Gaga was all that impressive. She's going to get accolades because the industry's "Pink Mafia" are out in full force behind her. This is a film like Ad Astra, that will resonate more based on the viewer's personal experiences. The more someone has had to live through or had an extended tour of duty with someone they loved who was battered by mental illness, I think this movie rings different. IMHO, this film will resonate more strongly in foreign markets and in Asia. ( There's more systemic decay weaponized against men out there)

There's an open unsettling theme that fame is a more than effective proxy for actual respect. I appreciate that Todd Phillips would go that far in a mainstream film, to cover the mercenary nature of other people in almost all circumstances without trying to hide it as slapstick humor as most other films would ( i.e. Oscar winning American Fiction) . The irony is that Arthur Fleck is more accepted, but also more alone and isolated than ever before. It's unapologetic, the marketing be damned. I can give Phillips credit for that much. Phoenix navigated through some tough scenes and tough sections of the script. This was not an easy role to play a second time by any stretch.

Better than the first? No ( Joker 2 has compelling sections, but there are clear structural flaws that corner it's narrative)

Worth seeing in the theater? No ( I set a very high bar for that though)

Do I think there will be a third installment eventually? Yes

Is it worth seeing? I think most people will see it anyway. And that's why some media outlets are furious. They can attempt to spike some reviews but they can't fight the tide. The IP and momentum is too big to stop.

Something I've said before is I just don't find a point in letting "professional movie reviews" , before release, sway you in any direction at all. If someone has a monetized pathway to make that review, they are compromised. Even Chris Gore of Film Threat or Critical Drinker, even though I agree with them more often than not, are compromised too. I wouldn't pay much attention to marketing interviews as well. All the major media outlets now are completely bought or leveraged. They don't respect you enough to let you come to your own conclusions, they've decided you need to agree or that something is clearly wrong with you. By reacting at all, you are justifying their paper thin crybaby activism. If you think something looks interesting, give it a chance, or don't. What you can bank on is simple word of mouth. Your friends. People you've known for a while. Maybe a coworker you think is a cool person and shares many of your viewpoints or tastes.

Do you know why some major media outlets and power players hate the Todd Phillips' Joker series? Because if you look at the world around Fleck, and then you look at the real world around all of us, that Arthur might not seem so completely insane after all. That his choices and response, in some brutal honest way, is completely logical for the farce he has to live in, even if he was completely sane. And when the definiation of "sanity" is held against a full measure purity test of total compliance, then who is really the broken one after all?

Todd Phillips is no endless film genius. He's not a revolutionary. He just committed the unforgiveable crime of holding up a mirror and asking the audience some questions that the system no longer wants anyone to talk about. This isn't a great film. But it's a completely honest one the deeper you look.

My interested in Joker 2 has been slowly syphoning away over the last year as more and more of this movie has been revealed. I just have no interest any more. Not even a mild curiosity. I'll watch this when it streams in December.

I still hope to hear good things about this... but it just sounds like a painful and flamboyant lesson.

it's not about "professional movie critics......
grace Randolph and John campea are always super duper positive and they always defend everything. they tend to try to help movies.
they defended the acolyte and the marvels .......

for them to hate this movie is really bad.

Joaquin Phoenix performance might still be really really good.

I'm sure it is. But...

Ad Astra sucked lol

For you. And that's OK.

Why does there need to be some kind of "consensus" on what personal opinion is OK or not? Look at Chappell Roan. Take away the core subjects that Roan was talking about, why does she need to "fall in line" to a specific "consensus"?

A lot of people are sick of this purity test BS. If you like something. Great. If you don't. Great too. You know you'll watch Joker 2 at some point. I know it. Everyone here knows it. You'll "give it a chance" anyway. So why not give it a real chance in total?

"A bunch of guys on YouTube hate it and a bunch of guys on Twitter hate it, so it must suck in absolute terms. I haven't watched it yet myself, but I'm going to do it anyway." That's just lazy in my book. But people can do what they want to do. Lack of nuance is one of the reasons so many people have left these forums over the years.

it's kind of offensive when a director hates his own audience. we gave him money. we made his first movie successful. then he turns around and slaps you. slaps you. he hated us. he slaps you

Buddy I’m not going to be surprised if half those hot toys figures preorder get canceled and those inart preorders get canceled after what I read. This weekend is going to be interesting. Seriously what a large fumble . This could have been absolutely stellar

"To me consensus seems to be - the process of abandoning all beliefs, principles, values and policies in search of something in which no-one believes, but to which no-one objects - the process of avoiding the very issues that have to be solved, merely because you cannot get agreement on the way ahead. What great cause would have been fought and won under the banner "I stand for consensus"?"

- Margaret Thatcher

"Historically, the claim of consensus has been the first refuge of scoundrels; it is a way to avoid debate by claiming that the matter is already settled."

- Michael Crichton

Very weird. Like dude. He’s a villian. Yea you’re going to have weirdos who idolize him but people idolize crazy people all the time. Hitler, dalmer, bundy, terrible celebs, drug traffickers. It’s inevitable. It’s sad but you can’t stop people from doing what they do.

Should of went the breaking bad route and just showed how evil never truly wins in the end not completely crap on your character lol

The only thing I remember liking from Joker was when the little guy couldn't reach the lock on the door and Arthur let him out. I could have done with more moments like that and less Arthur dancing around in his tighty whities. And the talk show finale was so on the nose I felt like I was missing something. I don't expect much from this one but the spoilers I've read actually sound kind of interesting in this kinda/sorta comic book movie that's like one multiverse over from proper Batman lore.

All Phillips and Phoenix have to do is wait four years, release a third installment, add in Batman or show Joker more in line with Paul Dini's conception of Joker, and the crowds will flock back to the fold. You could add Batman in for just five minutes and a third film would roll in the cash. If Phillips and Phoenix are done, or if Phoenix gets "cancelled" in the interim ( He's taken a public position on a clear polarizing "current event", he might get shanked for that one) , audiences will see a new Joker franchise in four years. If Phillips can squeeze out a trilogy, then 8 years. Most people here are likely to be alive in 8 years. Whether this forum survives another 8 years, well no one is going to know for sure.

There are actuaries and bean counters who are scheduling out the best way to optimize an IP. Once Tom Holland pumps out another Spiderman trilogy, it won't be long after that where you will see yet another Spiderman. The Joker concept will eventually be churned. If you don't like this flavor of ice cream, it's not the only kind of ice cream that exists in the world. Joker as a concept has proven it's billion dollar bankability and it's awards credibility. Also it's ability to draw in foreign audiences. And also it can generate critical acclaim. More Joker films are coming, with or without Phillips and/or Phoenix. Maybe some people here will like the future iterations better.

People who are saying the film is going to suck without seeing it yet are going to watch the film anyway. We all know that. If you are going to watch it anyway, why rob yourself of the potential to be pleasantly surprised. Or maybe you won't. Well, that's my take on it.

Folks can take this film as an insult to their fandom before they've seen it, or they can just see it as a different flavor of ice cream that they don't have to eat. But more ice cream is coming. Flavors you might like and flavors you won't.

It's not the worst thing in the entire world for many folks to turn off these social media platforms sometimes.

Yeah after seeing how deflated so many reviewers seem to be after watching this, who were such big fans of the first one, I'm quickly losing my desire to see it as well.

Feel like I might be better off cancelling my tickets and going to see Wild Robot this weekend instead. 😄
