Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

I have almost everything else I need including a newly painted head-sculpt I'm very happy with and the proper crazy-long scarf made using a new technique that much easier than my old technique and yields a much better and extremely stretchy result, but the coat is well beyond my humble capabilities.

Any tips on the scarf? And how did you modify the face?

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

The head in the pictures I posted before had more material added along with jawline and under the chin, but the newly painted headsculpt is actually a totally new head (from the second Tom figure I bought from Big Chief) that hasn't been modified at all in the usual sense, although it is also not quite stock either. I'll post pictures as soon as his new body arrives.

For the scarf, think ribbed t-shirts, dye, and doctorwhoscarf.com. The hardest part is getting the colors right since there are a minimum of seven that all have to be custom mixed and you can't really tell what they look like until after they are washed and dried.

Thanks for the info. I had wondered if there was a way to "print" a color into fabric. Has that been tried before? I have some sculpting clay, but I've never tried to add some onto an existing head before. It's some of the sclupey firm kind

You can get fabric sheets for regular ink jet printers which I've used for other projects, but that wouldn't give you the right texture for the scarf and I bet it would be impossible to get the deep saturated colors right. It would also be really expensive considering the cost of ink jet ink. There is also silk screening, but I don't know how to do that plus you run into the texture problem again. The dyeing is certainly time consuming, but it's not all that expensive and I can fine tune the colors as I go along. I like not having to deal with any machines or special supplies beyond making sure I don't run out of dye.

Sculpy is good stuff, but when I modify a head, I usually use Magic Sculpt which is a two part resin that air dries but has a nice long working time and has the real advantage over Sculpy in that it doesn't have to be heated it in any way to cure it. I get little 2 oz. tubs of it from eBay and that's more than enough to modify any number of heads.

I don't really care so much about the texture on the scarf. It was mostly the colors. Speaking of, thoughts on using dye on the coat? It's supposedly the right color in real life, but never looked like that on screen as far as I know. Kind of like the han solo brown/blue coat issue

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

See to me the scarf needs the ribbing as much as it needs the right colors. Otherwise, it's just a piece of striped cloth. On the other hand, I'm not at all bothered about the color of the coat and even if I were, there's nothing that can be done about it except replace it. The material Big Chief used can't be dyed or changed in any way. I think because of the nap, even getting it wet would do serious damage.

Only the face is repainted, that five o' clock shadow really kills the likeness to tom. It's a wonderful sculpt otherwise. Hair needs to be lightened a tad to. Do you get a custom scarf made?

Very nice repaint. The stock paint really is not good enough on a sculpt that should've been easy to do well.

I'm trying to decide whether I should buy this or not... I own a Hot Toys The Dark World Loki, would I be right in saying that this Tom is of similar quality or better?

In my opinion it's not quite at hot toys level paint wise. I don't have Loki but i have a few other hot toys to compare it to. Otherwise it's a beautifully made. The costume and accessories are fantastic and there's a beautiful backdrop to display him against. Adding to that it's a great figure of the greatest and most iconic of drs

So true! All they had to do was leave off the five o' clock shadow and the cartoon eyebrows. It's obvious they used the same paint apps on this as the tenth dr figure which it looks good on. Hopefully the new smiling head sculpt will look better paint wise

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

Yeah, it's good but no where near Hot Toys quality. I would say it's more Sideshow quality. It's still the best 4th Doctor figure around though and I think it's worth it.

It's not HT standard, but it's very good, and with some work can be great. I doubt very much you'll see another 1/6 4th Doctor so if you like him grab him. Here is mine with improvements I've made.
