Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

EDITION?
Someone mentioned before that Hot Toys no longer do limited edition numbers on the 1/6 scale pieces.
If that's the case, will they be producing this Ripley figure for years!!!

Surly they must have a limited number, even if it's not given to the buyer.
You can tell i've never bought Hot Toys before so any advice on this would be appreciated :)

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

When did HT ever do limited edition numbers?
I wouldn't know?

What i mean is, do they produce the same figure for 1 year, 2 years, 3 years?
Or is it released say in october and when it's sold out that is it, no more?

Some online dealers show recently released figures which are now listed as sold out and have been like that for months.
So, is it a case they are released in one big batch or are they released constantly over a couple of years?

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

HT had limited releases a few times in the past. The first Superman Returns and Batman Begins figures were limited to 1,000, I think. Seems like their first Jack Sparrow was, as well. Then, there were the 10th Anniversary figures that had runs of 4,000 each. And some con exclusives that have edition sizes of 15 or whatever it is. Most figures are not limited in this way, though they all have (unknown) production runs of course.

As for whether they produce more, produce them continually for awhile, or just produce them once for a brief time and move on, it seems like the first and last both happen. The latter is happening now, as Han, Chewy, and Obi Wan are getting second runs. I think the T2 Arnold MMS figure also had one of those. Then you have something like the Mark IV, which essentially was re-released.

In other words, not a lot of consistency.

if sothen why aren't they producing Tech Noir Terminator figs? Or the T2 figs? Or Sarah Connor? None of those were billed as 'limited edition' but pretty much on EVERYTHING they do, they reach a number and then stop. Same with Predator stuff too. Go try and find one of the first Black Widow figures (from their popular line of IM/Marvel stuff). If I had to guess they probably make around a few thousand and then call it a day.

I heard (don't know how true it is but was told to me by a store owner who was involved in selling the dragon/DML stuff as well as BBi, early Sideshow brand stuff) that the injection molds once they are used to make x number of head casts, that the detail starts to degrade and you will get poorer and poorer head casts. Unless you buyild another injection mold, latter made heads will not look as nice as those cast first. Supposedly, these molds are pretty expensive to make for the castings, which would drive the cost up significantly if they continued to endlessly produce figures.

Many thanks for the well detailed replies.

I heard the same thing about molds degrading over time with use and with trends changing all the time i guess they move onto something new.

Thanks for the explanations.

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

For the most part when a figure is gone it's gone. The Star Wars figures seem to be the only exception and I'm guessing that's due to the popularity of the franchise. Most other figures don't receive second runs. Occasionally there will be a 2.0 version but a lot of times there's a difference between the two releases.

they are simply made of leftovers from actually producing figures :lecture

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

They probably have a limit on a single run so they can plan their 2.0 version for a latter date.

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

If that was the case there would be way more 2.0 figures than there actually are.

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

Yes, I posted the same on video:

I said that I like this Ripley, but I'm sure that Hot Toys has changed the sculpt or paint on the last prototype. Or maybe this one is the figure we will have on hand... I dream with that option. :lol

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

Not the same video, but both from Secret Base. Pretty sure this is the one you'll get, and I don't see that they have changed anything from the last prototype. Just the lighting.

i found Kane on ebay only for $200 plus $79 shipping to me, that was a perfect deal, but his dumb head stopped me from buying him.
but you made your own, and you even finally made Lambert, turned out wonderful.
oooooh i hate you for that Nostromo collection and that wonderful Kane head especially, you're going to ignore list.

no, your photo made me cry. it's just cruel and irresponsible to boast such customs in a world where the only company with 1/6 alien license makes only ironmeh.

I have wanted to say: it's Secret Base too, but mine is on video.

And... I'm not sure that it's the lighting...
