Did that actually do anything in the end? The impression I got from Bishop was that it was the dropship crash.

Yeah, he did say the crash caused too much damage & an overload was inevitable - but I like to think the Marines did some damage to the primary heat ex-changers firing a million rounds and spraying acid everywhere.
