Instead of moving the existing magnets, would it have been possible just to glue small neodymium magnets around it?I’ve attempted the ‘widening the magnets in the base’ mod today and, quite frankly, I’m disgusted by how overly simple that video made it seem.
The first issue was simply how to get into it. I should have looked for this video before starting. You peel the underside sticker off to reveal the screws holding it together.
I was trying to just pry the bottom off for ages like a monkey, scuffing up parts unnecessarily.
Right- the mod.
I now assume he was using some sort of heated scalpel because he sliced through that plastic like butter. A regular scalpel/exacto knife does not work anywhere near as well.
Also, he had the ease of being able to simply pop off the cover of the magnet compartment; my magnets were glued firmly in place- from both sides- so I had to switch to a dremel and basically just shred through and melt all the plastic to shave it off of the magnets. Sparks were flying.
I wish mine looked like this.

Then you’re stuck with the issue of the magnet being glued from the top to the underside of the street part of the base.
The magnets are also slightly recessed with another little rim of plastic around them so you can’t slice under the magnet to pry them off or forcefully slide them out without first shaving away a load more plastic- but there’s only about 3/4 mm of plastic to play with so you have to be very careful.
You can chisel or dremel. I dremeled. Ultimately I ended up having to get a large screwdriver and hammer it at the magnet to dislodge it from the glue. I chipped the first magnet in a couple places. This thing required genuine violence to move it.
Finally, with access to the bare plastic, I could carve out the ‘slide path’ for the magnet by digging a shallow trench. This is where I dremelled a smidge too far and ended up poking a hole through the damn thing. Twice.

Oops.
Pretty devastating but I’ve patched it up and will paint it well enough to not be too bothered. Joker’s feet will be standing over that bit so it would only be an issue if I ever resell. Not planning that any time soon.
So, to get the magnet placed a decent distance out, you also need to cut through one of the vertical supports that screw into the lower half of the base.
You can see here before I made the call to cut.

I want a notably wide ‘HIT ME’ stance so went all out and cut through that support. It’s still per early functional so worth doing.
After all that pain, I at least knew what to expect so got through the second cover more efficiently but there’s no escaping the sheer brutality necessary to get the magnet out when it’s super mega glued in place.
Here’s where I’ve set my magnets and I’ve slapped some apoxy resin around the outskirts to stop them dropping out.

I thought this would be a quick cut and slide job and I’d be setting up my full costume Joker, at last this weekend.
This mod ended up taking a few hours so robbed me of the time I’d allotted to actually enjoying the figure. Till next weekend, I guess.
