Yeah,

I think part of the problem was that I rushed him the first time, now I'm going to take it real slllloooooooowwwww......

I don't have a deadline

CHEERS!

I love that cart. That weathering is amazing. If I might offer just one suggestion - where the wheels meet the rails wouldn't rust.

Filling it with thugs would be perfect.

here is a picture of my final raiders indy,

Hi All

Yep got to agree Silent Surfer's indy is amazing that is for sure.

marsattack - If your looking for an outfit for a thuggee try this link https://www.d-artstudios.com/ Deniz has done a number of indy outfits and they are great. Also you mentioned that the mine cart is a kit do you know if it's available at all.

j2_gumpy - Wonderful indy mate and Mark did an awesome job with the HS.

Hi all, thank you for all the help!
Yes the cairo dude , I could get the body and head tunic cheap and maybe the belts accross the chest could be custom made.
I have emailed deniz foe a quote but need pictures to send him.
Kamandi: the cart is missing some parts still and yes the wheels contact surface will have a graphitte and black smoke rubbed in them as will the whole cart. It will add that hint of scuffed shiny metal to the whole thing.
I am working on the brake system which actually works and real wood levers.
It has a light in front and back.
The rusting system was very difficult to maintain off the wheels.

On a different note, I got offered the original half bust 1 6th thugee used in filming the scene by some guy that "apparently" found this doll in a bin while working at ILM.
It was made from wood and it was original , but at over 5k I passed it up.
The above is what I heard and by no means a confirmed story, lol

When i was over in the states I did see that system, or at least one of those in the hobby shops. It was too expensive for the quantity you get and the salesman said it was rusty looking but not real rust!
I have in the past used MIG pigments which are dusts and work really well over a rust flat paint achieving that " orangee" leak stain, however I wanted more of a rusted look although I achieved more of an abandoned look!lol

I will share this cheap and very easy way to achieve the REAL rust effect although YOU will have to practice to see what you want it to look like and how you want the streaks to run, eg. off bolts etc.

I bought White iron paint used in decorating walls , vases etc. from my local paintshop and the patina to react and rust which is simply Hydrochloric acid , this you can get from home depot , garden shops etc, as it is used to clean.

Apply the iron paint exactly how you want the rust to look, obviously from top thicker streaking to thin down. Then after it dries hit it with hydrochloric in the same way, never from side to side, the drips will be reproduced naturally.
I will post up the following pics that have the MIG pigments added of graphite, smoke and dark rust, which softens the rust and gives the rust look an even further WEAR look. Remember it looks like real rust cause it is!
Then seal with satin and there you go!

One important thing about this is that I would be testing all the above in whatever material you are using , as the brands and contents would differ, but you can use normal hydro. The resin on the cart was not affected one bit as it is user friendly (the paint) reaction time is almost instant but naturally that was only one step, you have to tweek it to your liking.
I am more than sure 90 per cent of you guys could duplicate or even better this job as I have seen how you guys paint!!!!
I wish I could paint those heads.
If you need anymore info , ask away.

Sorry forgot to mention, none f these paints were spray type, those do not have enough IRON in them for the hydro to react, these were all brushed on thick also creating flecks of rust , imperfections and thicker "welds" exactly what i wanted.

difference in white iron and blue iron paint

wheels were sprayed with humbrol steel rub and buff , then polished:

Very cool. There's some visible bumpy texture, did you add a layer of gesso or did that occur naturally from the rusting?

BTW - the polished surface on the wheels turned out great too.

Very nice,

Dorgmal did a great job. It looks a bit like my first take in that the eyebrows only seem to show up in close ups, something I'll remedy a little for take 2 which is underway already.

I also used blue iron paint , difference is with this one you get the darker rust and with the white iron you get the greens and light oranges.

Apply the iron paint exactly how you want the rust to look, obviously from top thicker streaking to thin down. Then after it dries hit it with hydrochloric in the same way, never from side to side, the drips will be reproduced naturally.
This was done over a flat black surface and a humbrol hull red base.

One important thing about this is that I would be testing all the above in whatever material you are using , as the brands and contents would differ, but here in Australia , the paint's brand was "Potters" and so was the acid but you can use normal hydro. The resin on the cart was not affected one bit as it is user friendly (the paint) reaction time is almost instant but naturally that was only one step, you have to tweek it to your liking.

Very clever idea, I think a step by step tutorial with pics would be another one.
