Hey hey hydrobot fans! An update and some progress!
I have just finished the protoypes' core... I decided to go for individual segments of plastic castings, with a central core of flexible copper core wire (2 strands for a mix of flexibility and strength to hold poses).
I have cast each piece with two internal bars to keep them spaced and keep as acurate as possible to the movie version.
There are also four "lugs" on each segment, the top and bottom to locate each individual one of the outer casings, and the side ones for some detail.
I have included a picture of an endo holding it so you can see that, when the head and tail are added, it will be the right scale.
As you can see it has complete flexibility and using individual segments will retain it's ability to be bent and twisted in all directions... even a coiled and ready to strike pose.
The next bit will be easy... the upper and lower outer casings, and I should have them finished by the end of the week.
The head will be more difficult. I want to do it so the jaws open and close, preferabally with a spring action. If not I will have to go for interchangable heads, one with open jaws, one with closed. Comments and opinions on this would be appreciated.
If things keep falling into place as easy as this has so far I may even get adventurous and do one or two with LED eyes.
The final finished piece will be better looking and have cleaner lines as instead of just painting it I will be mixing some metallic dye in with the plastic, and only dry-brushing the high-lights and low-lights.
For anyone interested the price is going to be £60 a bot, or £70 if I do LED eyes.
