Guys, if I cannot get it to look like this, move like a snake and have a hinged jaw I wouldn't do it! Even Hot Toys get cussed on this board as we all have high standards.

The playmates version is not a bad toy.. for what it is.. its a toy.. and its made very well for the money.. but yours seems to be a realistic movie replica.. sounds great..cant wait to see how they turn out..

Stuck waiting on these styrene sheets! I may start on the core tomorrow, while I am waiting.

Hey hey hydrobot fans! An update and some progress!
I have just finished the protoypes' core... I decided to go for individual segments of plastic castings, with a central core of flexible copper core wire (2 strands for a mix of flexibility and strength to hold poses).
I have cast each piece with two internal bars to keep them spaced and keep as acurate as possible to the movie version.
There are also four "lugs" on each segment, the top and bottom to locate each individual one of the outer casings, and the side ones for some detail.
I have included a picture of an endo holding it so you can see that, when the head and tail are added, it will be the right scale.
As you can see it has complete flexibility and using individual segments will retain it's ability to be bent and twisted in all directions... even a coiled and ready to strike pose.
The next bit will be easy... the upper and lower outer casings, and I should have them finished by the end of the week.
The head will be more difficult. I want to do it so the jaws open and close, preferabally with a spring action. If not I will have to go for interchangable heads, one with open jaws, one with closed. Comments and opinions on this would be appreciated.
If things keep falling into place as easy as this has so far I may even get adventurous and do one or two with LED eyes.
The final finished piece will be better looking and have cleaner lines as instead of just painting it I will be mixing some metallic dye in with the plastic, and only dry-brushing the high-lights and low-lights.
For anyone interested the price is going to be £60 a bot, or £70 if I do LED eyes.

Bump for a awesome thread!!! Need some more updates on the LED eyes and some more pics! :D

awesomeness so far! wow, if i really liked this movie, i'd be all over this. regardless of the film though, i'm looking forward to seeing updates.

I just saw the life size prop of the Hydrobot at the International Makeup Artist Tradeshow (IMATS) in Pasadena this last Saturday. In person it didn't seem very long.

the 600 endo was also there, and it wasn't as tall as you might think. Still too thick in the limbs to pass for human at all, but the head was still human sized. There was actually a guy there who was as tall as the endo, but he was like Big Show, the Wrestler, tall.

I should have a working prototype by this end of this week guys... I want to get this to the highest standard I can and that means sculpting, casting and then assembling nearly a hundred parts so that it has a full range of movement.

Some progress pics of Mr. Hydrobot... this prototype is coming along well. A few kinks to iron out about the segments slipping on the wire (which is why I always do a prototype), but I have a solution for that.
I love the metallic finish on the segments... I have mixed metallic powder in the resin mix, so no globby paint and the detail stands out well.
It has a full range of movement but that means doing each segment individually which takes time. I think it will take about a week to cast and build each bot, so I will definately only be doing 5 for board members.
Oh, and anyone who notices the top fins missing on the back segment... that is part of the tail section and has no top fins, only the ones pointing down.

Some more progress shots now the body is finished... modelled by a shirtless Arnie. I will start on the tail tomorrow, then the hard bit... the head!

The price will be around £70 plus £5 p+p in the UK. Just multiply by 1.5 for equivalent in USD, and shipping a bit extra, say about $15.
I should be ready to start on Monday... just finishing the tail section, then got to do the head over the weekend.
I can do it one of two ways: either interchangable open mouth/closed moth heads. This would be sturdiest.
The other option is to have hinged jaws... less robust as the scale makes things so fragile at the thicknesses I will be working at (for example, think of any Hot Toys parts that have broken on you!).
I will probably go for the interchangable heads as I do not want to sell anyone a product that may not even survive the postal trip intact!
I will try to post pics later of the tail... had to work from the concept sketches for this as I cannot find production pics of the tail (I don't think it was made for the movie, just cgi for the water sequences).
