I've been watching the second season of
Rogue Heroes and got to thinking again about the dog Paddy was photographed with.
In the series there's a dog called Withers who was adopted by Bill Fraser:
Searching this morning I may have found the identity of the dog in the historical photo:
Thomas 'Tommy' Corps, WW2 SAS
A few weeks ago I was contacted by Neil Hudson regarding a relative of his during the Second World War. This is his ancestors story.
Thomas H. Corps (Or Tommy) served in 1 SAS during the Second World War. Tommy was one of the original members of ' L Detachment' formed by David Stirling in 1941.
Tommy had been born in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and his parent regiment had been The Glider Pilot Regiment. His dog 'Tiny' became the regiment's mascot and after the capture of David Stirling, Paddy Mayne took charge of the SAS and Tommy became his body guard/batman/runner after the previous holder of the job was blown to bits.
Later he served behind the lines with the Italian Partisan's for so long his family thought he was dead as they had received no letters from him.
In 1944 and 1945, Tommy went into Normandy and parachuted into Norway to join up with the Norwegian Partisans to block the Russian advance into Norway. Tommy survived the war and stayed in the Army as a counter-terrorism expert.
Many thanks to Neil for allowing me to share his ancestors story
