So, I'm considering getting a second job. Does anyone have one? What are the best second jobs to get that will not impact my 9-5er and won't drive me crazy either?

I have a cubicle job and would really like to get a 2nd one that is more physical and away from a computer.

How much can I expect to make an hour these days at retail places or as a waiter?

Any tips or things I should look out for? Best way to manage your life when you have 2 jobs? Should I give up my full weekend or should I work nights after my normal shift?

Ideally I'd like to make about $200-$300 after taxes per month...are $10/hr part time jobs out there? Do places hire people to only work 30 or so hours a month?

Honestly if you were to wait on tables at a good place that serves booze you would make way more than at a retail store. However, you are usually there much later at night. And they want to give part timers ^^^^ty days to work. Good luck in the hunt! You might also want to check Best Buy. They pay part timers pretty well.

My own opinion is that bartender is about the best second job you can get. The money is good and the exposure to the fairer sex is a massive benefit. I am looking in to doing that myself despite the fact that I do not need a second job!

I drove Dominos Pizza as a second job for about a year. There WERE benefits to that as well...very interesting some of the situations that happened.

Oh...and a hell of a lot of places are making tip-earners share and declare their tips.

lol. bartending would be awesome if I was still single, but now it would just get me into Trouble (note the capital T).

I'm staying away from the Dominos and security jobs for that matter. I don't want to be mugged on the job. :lol

I think we need to hear more about this. :lol

I won't hijack this thread with the stories. But I could (and just might) start another thread just for these stories! I have also heard a few minor details on either this forum or SSG from other former Dominos drivers who had similar (and some even better) things happen to them.

Do it, man! :rock

I actually am stuck with a second job... after finishing my internship (out of state) and returning to Oklahoma. I agreed to start running a therapy group that I used to run before I moved, but the intention was for it to just be part time and I'd split the group duties with another guy.

Well nearly 3 years later I'm still there, but the other guy isn't and I have a full time job on top of it. But, I get paid $60-$90 for a 90 minute group and $15 an hour for paperwork. So while its annoying that I'm working late 2 nights a week, I'm making decent coin off of it.

working from home would be nice, but I don't have the discipline for it.

I need something where for maybe 4 hours after my primary work I just ground and pound through shelf stocking or something. I don't want to have to think much either. :lol

if you worked a later shift i would recommend stocking shelves at a 24 hour grocery store. they usually unload trucks after midnight. might not be good if you work 9-5 though. my friend used to do it but he worked 3-11 pm so it was like adding another 4 hours on top of that a couple nights a week.

I'd stay away from department stores... those have always been super ^^^^ty jobs.

Seems being a server of some kind (where tips are involved) is the best way to go. But of course that depends where you live, if you town is touristy or more affluent that kind of job is good, but if everybody's a cheapskate you can get royally screwed.

there are some nice restaraunts near but usually I think the nicer places expect you to have waiting experience which I don't.

Wal-Mart, for instance. Plus, they don't want to give anybody benefits under any circumstances, so I'm sure that they would be thrilled with someone intentionally looking to only work part time.

Waiting or bartending is the only way to go for quick cash. Retail is terrible and a waste of time imo, unless you are full time and there for benefits. but most retail places schedule you just a few hours short so they dont have to pay for your benefits.

I don't know what it's like around your parts, but finding a $10+ an hour part time job around here is hard. Minimum wage is the best you can do and that's usually some sort of service job. Plus, alot of places are going through temp services and you lose part of your pay to them.

If you have truck stops near you, truckers are the best tippers.

supermarket deli clerk is ok.
waiting tables may wipe you out for your down time.
retail stinks

you could get a cougar sugar mamma to pay for your sideshow toys as long as you "service" her once or twice a week. :monkey5

personally, i just roll prostitutes and rip off gang bangers who stray out alone. it's a community service and quite lucrative. ....... ok that's what i would do if i could.

or i slip and fall in fast food joints when the mop bucket comes out. :D

UPS PT+BENEFITS. (4 hours max)

You'll work your ass off, but you said Physical.

Retail is good IF you work overnights! (trust me, waaaaaay more laid back and casual at nights then dealing with customers. Plus you will usually get a discount)
