Hei I would be also interested in a Single an double sided pauldron :)

Well, I'm hoping to finish my double pauldron tomorrow and post a pic so people can see what you're getting. I'm also hoping to get some design time in tomorrow on the single. I don't think it will take me too long to do it, but I've been wrong before.

So, I've decided to do the single pauldron in two different versions, one with hard angles like the Phase II pauldrons, and one with more rounded edges. Here's the first version:

So, here's the rounded pauldron, the ammo pack (good for either pauldron), and a pic of the two together:

I may eventually go back to the single pauldron to make one more like Rex's from the TV series. It's actually quite different from what Sideshow made.

Now for the tricky part...printing them. I've found a pretty good method of orienting them on the printer to make sanding the print lines out easier to do. Wish me luck.

Well, after printing, sanding, and some base-layer painting, I've decided it may be "back to the drawing board" time. Printing it in 4 parts works nicely as far as making it easy to sand down...but those parts have to go back together. You would think that since those parts fit together perfectly in my 3D software that they would do so after being printed. Sadly, they don't. I can get them to go back together, but it takes a lot of work and super glue just doesn't want to work (plus it seems to dissolve the plastic as much as it holds it).

So...I guess I'm just going to have to figure out a way to get it to print in one piece (or two at most).

Frustrated.

What sort of plastic are you useing? Can you use styrene? It's great with glue. Or maybe check out my last post on 'dengar', I use a pinning method that might be good for you.

I use PLA. My experience with styrene (ABS) on my printer hasn't been good.

I am starting to become very interested in 3d printing. What kind of printer do you have? Also, for custom pieces like this, what is the best way to mass produce them? I am a character artist who would love to delve into custom heads and what not for collectors so I've been trying to gather more information on the pipeline for something like this.

I have a Robo3d. If you want to do custom heads and such, you won't be able to do it with a printer like mine. You'll need to get something capable of much finer detail or use a print service like Shapeways. It would probably be easier and cheaper to just use Shapeways to print a prototype and then make a mold and cast copies.

So, I did two test prints tonight of the double pauldron in one piece (two different orientations on the printer. I had good and bad results. The good news is, I think this is going to work. Bad news is, I'm not getting consistent output of material from my printer. In general, the prints came out OK. It was able to print them both in one piece and the support material was easy to remove (VERY important). Sadly, due to the inconsistent output, They aren't usable. There are a significant number of gaps in the print. I don't think it's my printer, but rather the material I'm using. I'm going to do another test print tomorrow and if that one doesn't work out, I'm going to order a new spool of PLA.

So, in short, some progress. Mainly a learning experience, but still, it looks like this will work once I get a couple of bugs worked out.

No. Been very busy and my last 2 prints haven't turned out. The heater on my print bed has also stopped working, which is not helping...

GRRRR!!!!!
