Just another case of Hollywood screwing up a property because all they care about is making money. Japanese actors would alienate american theater goers, and thus bite into their bottom line. Art be damned. Pretty much par for the course. I'll be happy to sit down, watch the original, and ignore the movie.

Wow, as a fan of the Anime, I popped in here to see what was up, thinking this would be another _____ slap to the original Japanese Anime, like Fist of the North Star. Emo dude and Twilight chick? Looks like I'm right. :lol

America needs to leave Japanese Anime alone. With the exception of Crying Freeman (which I didn't think was all that bad), It's never really worked out. :(

PRODUCTION HALTED

UPDATED: The production offices in Vancouver are being closed, with below-the-line talent and crew told to stop working. “Everybody is being sent home,” according to an insider.

Warner Bros is pushing the pause button on Akira.

......

The goal, says an insider, is to bring the budget down to between $60 million and $70 million. However, another source close to the production says the script, rather than the budget, has skidded the production. The project, this person says, will remain in the $90 million range.

60-70 million dollars is nothing for a big effects film.

It looks like WB wants to make this movie on the cheap so if (or when) it becomes an embarrassment they can quietly go direct to video.

The fact that it's being done isn't already? :dunno :lol

I know a previous director, I won't name names, but apparently it is a complete head____ for Warners to realise what they are dealing with. After Watchmen, i don't think this will actually materialize.... "it's like.. "But I don't really understand/ have the time to acknowledge the concept.." There is no way this can be made for 60M $.
$150-200, maybe.

I've come to the conclusion that Helena Bonham Carter is the female Nicholas Cage. Whenever her name is listed you should be very cautious about spending money to see the film. For every decent movie like Fight Club there's 10 others that suck like Planet of the Apes, Terminator Salvation, Dark Shadows...
