I was just flipping through the just-released art-book "AKIRA Layouts and Key Frames."
The books (three volumes) reproduce thousands of production drawings from the making of the movie as well as several cel reproductions.
The artwork shows why this is still the greatest animated movie of all time.
NOBODY, not Disney, not Ghibli, not Pixar....nobody had this much detail packed into every single frame as this movie did. There are layers of detailed finished drawings that you'll never even see cause they're obscured by MORE detailed drawings! Otomo is an absolute madman.
I've seen the movie 8000 times and I still find things I've never seen, and these drawings gave me even more clues about what hidden details are there that Ive missed all this time.
Here's some pics I took while I was reading the book. If you want more, check out this dude's review:

(I bet you had no idea there was an elaborate Snow White drawing in the background of one scene....
Just look at the instrument panel of that aircraft....that's insane! Check out the pilot's helmet!!
Look at that WTF moment....a lot of these were done by the animation staff but this one with that grotesque baby is unmistakably an Otomo original.
