Definitely a good read, with great pictures. The Alien looks so elegant in that article. I almost wish that the paint job was a light grey with a dark wash to bring out the details, so that it looked more like Giger's paintings. I prefer the concept drawings of the base over the final version though. If they had combined the space jockey head/helmet from the front of the first concept drawing with the architectural "wings" of the second, I think it would have looked great.

So if their artists are clearly capable of drawing the Alien's mouth/front of the head accurately...

...why, then, are the sculpts of their Big Chaps always so off?

Great read. The sculpt job is definitely good, but I really don't feel the final piece, mostly for the pose. Also, the tail wrapped around the body in a more subtle way in the artworks - but I'm glad they haven't slapped the nameplaten nor the jockey helmet in front of the base like in the original art, it was a bit too busy.

Eww, what are those things on the sides of the base in the concept drawing. They look like b***rs.

The one on the right is an egg. The one on the left is a person being morphed into an egg.

Yeah that base does look like a woman giving birth, ****** and all...

It is true. But if you do read on the blog, the concept was to make the femininity and sexual content obvious much like Giger would have done.
"As for the base, we knew we wanted a grand architectural shape that has a feeling that it framed the composition.
Giger's Art has an aggressive, and beautiful design aesthetic, as well as giving a bid and wink to sexuality. Within the base there are many organic shapes thy are stylized representations of the human body merged with the architectural quality of Giger's design sensibilities."
To me it was very obvious in this model's shot here: ImageUploadedByTapatalk1454275457.173952.jpg And it doesn't lose that sexuality expression all Giger's Art has been known for all of this time. I do however feel, that I would've liked the Jockeys helmet to cover the plaque with the name on the bottom and the back of the base. It may be busy for some but adding other original elements to the piece, would've been fantastic. Just mho.ImageUploadedByTapatalk1454275662.626830.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1454275672.728504.jpg

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I don't know where I've been, or how I missed these developments... but I am totally turned off that this is being done in mostly PVC. 2lbs!?

Speechless. Seems like an attempt to save on shipping from Asia. I mean, a statues weight changes the whole experience. Sideshow knows this!

I realize you can't "feel it" on display, but that doesn't mean I want a plastic toy either. If I did want something like this, I'd be looking at budget brands like ArtFX (as others have stated). Something major will be lost looking at the statue, knowing that it weighs almost nothing.

The only hope is that this gets a 100% primo paint-job. Sideshow, please don't cut that corner. If this thing gets the same murky airbrushing (ie: Alien Maquette) and its PVC, I'm not sure there will be any redeeming qualities left. And that's coming from someone who spends thousands on your products every year.

I'm with you, I think it looks great and I'm very tempted to order. But despite the reasons for the materials (arguably better detail) I am not happy with spending so much on a feather light piece of plastic. It might actually stop me ordering. I appreciate that there may be genuine reasons for the choice of material, but it does seem the customer base is responding in a negative manner to all of the PVC stuff in general so it may be wise to listen and take a step back on the plastic stuff regardless of whether the benefits were there or not.

I can appreciate the work that went into making this but I still can't rationalize spending $450 for a glorified ArtFX figure.

I just put my Machiko PF back in the box, been ultra careful, everything was secured. Then I looked and I saw one of the wrist blades broke off, I haven't touched it, it fell off on itself after I put the body back... seriously, that stuff is filmsy and made of s--t. Which is why I don't really trust any material used by Sideshow, a lot of their stuff just seems cheap like crazy.

I understand the use of pvc for making extremely detailed pieces. And i agree it has its benefits. But for some reason i cannot get behind spending this much money on cheap thin plastic. We need to honest here,.. we have all noticed sideshows quality decline on polystone pieces over the years. What makes us think that their pvc ventures will be any better ?? (Especially with their pvc record to date ) second negative is not only has their statue quality dropped so has their paint app. I cannot see this getting the paint app it deserves tbh. Now if they said the pvc was used ( expensive to setup at FIRST, extremely cheap after tooling setup. ) so the majority of piece cost went into stricter paint app qc then i could get behind it. But as it stands this much money for a piece that weighs the same as just the horns from my lord darkness lsb,... they can keep it. Fingers crossed it turns out top notch for the ones who bought it though.

PVC when done correctly will provide ultra realism and details i.e. Hot toy figures and blitzway M Monroe statue.

PVC when done badly, will look like cheap plastic toys, i.e. Sideshow superman.

Conclusion: Zero confidence in sideshow having the care or skills to use PVC properly, when they can't even manage a much simpler project like the superman statue. It will be a giant Kenner type plastic toy that cost 10x more.

Very easy pass and wait for in hand first.
