I took my dogs to the dog park today and one of them got in it with another dog. I'm a little pissed that some stupid lady would bring her old, grouchy, and unsocialized dog to the park to get in fights with other dogs at the park, but that is another story.

My dog got nipped on the ear. Once I separated them, I noticed the blood. cleaned it up with water and a napkin while I was there, came directly home, and applied hydrogen peroxide and neosporin. The tear/rip in his ear doesn't go through, but it's about a 1-inch gash in his skin. It had stopped bleeding for a few hours when it scabbed over, but I just checked and it opened again and I reapplied neosporin.

My question, does this require a $250+ vet visit? I was hoping my attempt at cleaning the wound would be sufficient and let it heal on it's own.

Can it wait till tomorrow to see how it's doing?

Hey Messa,

My biggest concern would be did the womans dog have all his shots? Does he have anything that he could give your dog? That would be my biggest thing.

My dog has gotten cuts or things close to that before but I just keep it clean and do the same as you with the neosporin, keeping it clean is the biggest thing, if it even looks like it is going to be infected take him to the vet ASAP. My dog has cancer and is on chemo but even with cuts I usually take care of them at home with no issues...and this is all assuming your baby is up to date on his shots as well.

Good luck.........oh and he gets lots of treats for getting a boo boo.

I'm no expert, but I would take your dog in. Not necessarily for the cut, but because who knows what that other dog has. If the lady hasn't socialized it, it might not be current on its shots. Better be safe than sorry. If you love your dog like I love mine, I'd rather pay the $250 and make sure he is going to be fine than have something bad happen.

But that cut does look nasty. Might need stiches. Looks kinda deep.

My dog got bitten by another dog when he was at a kennel when I went on vacation. The owner of the other dog had to pay for my dog to get stitches, so I'd hunt down this lady and make her pay!

The wound isn't bad, but because of where it's located it would bleed alot. My girlfriend is a vet tech and I'll see if I can get ahold of her and ask her. Try looking something up on the web. You might try crazy glue. Works for humans.

One thing though.....do you know for a fact that the other dog has it's shots? And is your dogs shots up to date?

Sorry to see/hear this Mesa. I would definitely take your dog to see the Vet only because you don't know what that other dog has. Better safe than sorry in this case.

Keep us updated.

Yes, my dog has all it's shots. As much as I hate how vets nickel and dime you when you go there (or at least mine does), I keep the shots and heart worm medicine current.

I've never seen this lady there before, and she had two dogs. We talked just prior to the fight and she said that her dog "likes to prove he's king when at the dog park" or something to that effect when we noticed our two were getting a little rowdy. Her other dog was a much larger breed, looked to be pure, so going off that alone I'm guessing she keeps her dogs vaccinated as well.

I confronted her while I was leaving. I told her I had to go home to clean my dog up because he was bleeding and that if her dog couldn't play nice at the park, maybe she shouldn't bring it. Several other witnesses suggested as much quietly to me in person, but said nothing to her. Prior to the fight, she told me to come and get my dog. At that point, I thought they were playing. "Quatro" (my dog) is a little instigator, he is a (Boston) terrier after all, but it's always been playful where he pounces, does a play bark and throws his head around, then backs off, hoping the other dog plays back. When the bite occurred, I threw a squeaky ball for my other Boston (Westside) to fetch, this lady's "Cujo" chased Westside, Quatro chased Cujo, and on way back Cujo and Quatro were going mouth/teeth to the face of each other. So when I confronted her, she said that she had warned me about getting my dog while I thought they were playing, and in hindsight I wish I had, provided I knew the way her dog was going to act. So after I told her that maybe she shouldn't bring her dog, she said they were both going at it, which at that point they were, so I couldn't say much else, except I concluded that I've never had a problem with my dogs for the years I've been bringing them to that park until today.

I wish I had asked about shot records, etc, but I was more concerned with getting my dog home and cleaned up, slipped the mind.

I know with a vet visit, they will run all sorts of tests, they will all turn out negative, and after $200-$300, they will do exactly what I've already done, clean the wound and wrap it in gauze. I'll keep the situation monitored in case anything looks bad, infection, etc.

But thanks for the advice.

searching online: 50% take to vet immediately, 50% let wound heal if it doesn't look too serious and not a rabid animal bite

Edit: crap, now the more I read, the more I'm getting worried. Sounds like infection is the biggest thing to look out for. I'll look at wound tonight/tomorrow morn and got to vet/clinic if any sign of infection. Online mentioned possible administering antibiotics.

Damn I wish I had gotten the ladies contact info.

keep it clean and monitered. unless the other dog did actually look like cujo: rabid dribbling etc. if the other dog looked well kept id say you have nothing to worry about

I agree. If it ripped through the ear, I'd be more concerned. I know if it were my dog, I'd just clean it up and keep my eye on it. If it were a child of mine. I'd do the same thing. Unless it was something that needed stitches, I'd take care of it myself, just like my parents did me.

Sorry to hear about your dog Mesa. I would just clean it and make sure that he doesnt scratch it or mess with it so it can scab up.

Mesa, here is what my vet tech friend said.......

just check it daily for any discharge and pay close attention to the dog. If acts lethargic or won't eat or has diarrhea, he should get it checked.

She also said you could use skin glue if it doesn't seal off itself. She said super glue is fine too, but she isn't sure how sterile it would be.

My doy had a injury(dog fight wound) like that and it cost me about 125$ to get him treated. Your biggest concern should be a bacterial infection(other dog didnt have shots and its teeth probably werent clean). Just my 2 cents.

Hope your dog is ok.

my suggestion is to keep treating it yourself, if in a day or so it still doesnt completely heal then take him to the vet. as long as it doesnt start to show signs of puss he should be fine, the good thing is it didnt go through and from the pictures the cut doesnt seem too bad. also i know it burns like a mutha but try alchohol. good luck!

From the sounds of it the lady already knew her dog was an alpha male. Most male dogs will get into it if not kept away from each other especially when two major alpha males cross paths. They have to prove who is the top dog or who's the boss. You're lucky they didn't start fighting worse ,depends on the dog but if one isn't willing to back down and show deference it will be a fight to the death. If the lady warned you about getting your dog I'd say she's had things like this happen before and should have known better than to bring that particular dog to a place she knew there would be many other dogs.Unless she's just a complete idiot and knows nothing about animal behavior.Cut should be fine just keep it clean and keep an eye out for signs of infection.Animals heal fairly quickly.

Infection is the primary concern of any medical personnel when it comes to open wound. Making sure that your puppy's temp is within normal range and no funky odor on the open wound.

If you have the lady's phone number, ask her if the dog is up-to-date with his/her shots.

I would still take it in to the vet, but most likely they will just give it a deep cleanse, this is only if the do that bit your dog is up-to-date with the shots, with normal saline and apply gauze or bandage with antibacterial medication.

Nice pup.

Just read your post regarding not getting the lady's info. My suggestion is get your pup to a vet for blood test.

I seriously doubt the woman would have given you any information anyway, since it doesn't seem like she thinks acting responsibly is necessary.

In May of '07 I took my 11 year old Golden to the Vet and after an hour and $260 they told me they couldn't determine what was wrong with her and suggest I take her to the University of Penn veterinary hospital. I took her home and she seemed to improve, but about a week later she was looking for a quiet spot. I took her to Penn, they diagnosed her (cancer), treated her, stabilized her and unfortunately, had to euthanize her. All that and had her cremated for $100.

I fired my other vet. I mean they did what they could but I felt as if they should have told me up front that she was beyond their ability instead of running the meter.
In other words, talk to your friends with pets and see if you can find a vet with the animal in mind as first priority.
