Mesa, here is what my vet tech friend said.......

just check it daily for any discharge and pay close attention to the dog. If acts lethargic or won't eat or has diarrhea, he should get it checked.

She also said you could use skin glue if it doesn't seal off itself. She said super glue is fine too, but she isn't sure how sterile it would be.

I used to be an veterinary assistant yrs ago and id agree with that. But i seriously recommend you dont use superglue yourself. Its better to be safe than sorry especially if there is an infection and u seal it up. If it keeps bleeding or does discharge any puss, especially if its Green or yellow let the vet handle it immediately, as thats a serious infection and can be fatal.

thanks everyone for the input. Quatro is fine, the cut scabbed over nicely, just black and crusty now. He's eating and crapping like normal, so not worried about it anymore. I was mostly concerned the first day when it opened up a couple of times. But I think with the peroxide and cleaning, I avoided any infection.

Thats good news. keep an eye on it for the rest of the week, and give it a light clean mainly around the cut every few days. I say light because u dont want to take the scab off. Before u clean it give it a close look and a very light squeeze (not with your nail) to make sure no puss is there. Make sure to wash your hands before and after as well.

Yaaaaay, good doggie.

That's why she said to use skin glue because superglue might not be sterile. When I told her about Mesa's situation she thought he was poor and couldn't afford vet care. :lol

My brother superglues his fingers all the time. I don't have the nerve to do it!

I cut open the side of my finger with a butchers knife once and I superglued it shut. It didnt get infected and healed up nicley. I didnt have anything at the time to put around or on it but I dont think I'll use superglue again :lol

Yeah vet bills are kinda pricey. Im crap with superglue as well :lol.

What i should have said was, with that particular wound because its a gash rather than a normal cut there isnt enough skin too stretch over easily to glue. If that was a big wound you'd more than likely need a skin graft.

Glad to hear he's ok.

A somewhat related and sad story. A buddy I work with who lives nearby... sadly his dog got run over yesterday (Thursday). He had to leave work because he got a call from the vet (also my vet) that they had his dog with a broken leg. Coincidentally, he live just across the street from the vet and the dog got hit right in front of "Brown Road Animal Clinic." This was around 11:30. The vet was insistent that he get there ASAP. He checked out of work, got several calls along the way that he needs to get there ASAP. He gets to the vet, and his dog is there, broken back leg and all. The choices: put dog down, or have back leg amputated (back leg, at the hip). And he needed to decide right then and there. He, and his wife who had joined him, had no idea what to do. Quoted cost of amputation = ~$2000. Vet kept pressuring them to decide quickly, which was a tough decision because of the finances involved. Come to find out, reason why needed to decide so quickly, was because the vet office closed at noon. !!!!!!!! Again, this is/was also my vet. These A-holes at this veterinary office were so worried about getting off in time to go home at noon that they made an already stressful situation even worse for my friend. Long story short, they decided to take their dog to someplace more qualified, amputation was less ($1700), and my buddy picked his dog up today after work and after the amputation. They still owe $200 for the 1.5 hour "stay" that their injured dog was at our vet.

Today when he told me the story of how he was treated by the lady veterinarian at our common vet's office (guilt, shame, accusatory), I then decided I would never give these A-holes any more of my money or allow them to care for my pets.

I got the same treatment the last time I was in there trying to get a refill of heart worm medicine. Lady vet insisted I needed to have a heartworm test, even though each dog had been on heartguard since old enough. Heart worm tests run about $60 each (I have two dogs), take less than 15 minutes, and medicine is another $50 each. So you already have a $200+ bill. I agreed to the first heartworm test (over a year ago) because I figured it couldn't hurt. But in order to get a refill, they insist on another test. I challenged her reasoning, asking if they had been on heartworm medicine since the last test (i.e. preventing heartworms), why was another test necessary. She didn't like me questioning her judgment. The "discussion" went on for a little while before she started accusing me that I must not care for my dogs since I didn't want to pay for the test. The scene didn't end well, when I finally got tired of it, raised my voice, and asked her, "Are you going to give me my dogs medicine or not!" I got a 3-month supply rather than the year supply I was asking for. In order to get a refill, she says the dogs need another test.

I'm not too cheap/poor to pay for necessary care for my animals, but I hate to waste money if there isn't a serious need. I live alone, and I love my dogs because they are part of my small family. But I started having a bad feeling about my vet (Brown Road Animal Clinic: Dr. McNaulty, Mesa AZ, Brown Road and Higley) which is why I was hesitant to take them in for what turned out to be a nick on the ear (that bled a lot at first).

I'm just hoping that I will be able to transfer all my dogs medical and vaccination records to whatever new vet I find. I hope all vets aren't as interested in milking every nickel and dime from me in order to care for my pets.

Edit: All healed. It's a good scar, but this dog is tough. He didn't even know anything might have been wrong. It's amazing the pain tolerance animals have; makes many humans look like complete *******.

That's a very handsome (or cute, if its female :lol) Boston !!!

I'm sorry to hear about all of your trouble at the clinic. But at least everything turned out OK.

I'm sorry to hear about the way that vet treated you also man, I'm sure not all of them are like that. I'm glad the cut healed nicely, I love my dog as well, she's a Miniature German Shepherd. Unfortunately she's an old dog now, she has Arthritis and she's lost a good deal of her vision, I can;t help thinking sometimes that she's getting to the end of the road. I've had her since she was a puppy and I don't know if I'll get another pet after I lose her. Take care of your dogs man, I can tell you already do, they really are mans best friend.

Mesa that cut has healed very very well :D

As for your ex vet clinic id say their jerks. Ive never known of any vets who would rush people cos they want too leave work early, its truly is appalling. All the vets ive ever known would stay hours after work especially in an emergency, and that kinda bedside manner is F*@kin awful.

Mesa, when I went in for a heartworm refill my vet's receptionist told me the same thing. Said I'd have to have my dog tested. She said since I hadn't gotten the medicine from them that I had to do it. I told her I had come in and gotten a year's worth and I had some already so it had been awhile since I got it. She said there was no record of it so I had to get another test. She also said my dog needed a distemper shot, which I knew he had gotten a few months back. I told her forget it. Anyway, since it's winter here, I'm waiting till spring to get his medicine since mosquitos aren't around now. I will be checking for another vet, though I like the vet, I can't stand the receptionist who is fairly new and acts like she knows all. She's not even a tech!

Glad your dog and your friend's is okay. You sometimes have to take things into your own hands.

As long as she has quality of life and is happy, then all is good. What are you doing for the arthritis? Baby aspirin works really well.

hey Mesa, i'm glad to see your dogs healed up nicely and all thats left is a small scar, it also is a shame to read about how some a-hole vet treated your friend, i mean if you cant stay and work overtime you shouldnt be a Vet in the first place and go get a 9 to 5 job, imagine a doctor refusing to operate or treat someone cuz its time to leave........thats pretty dumb. on the brighter side its good to see your friends dog made it minus the leg but it was indeed better that putting the little guy down. and you're right man, i too would have switched to another vet. good luck!

I was giving her Rimadyl, but I have to get her a check-up with her Vet so I can get a new prescription. In the meantime I'm giving her the baby aspirin, it does seem to work really well.

Sometimes baby aspirin works better than arthur meds. Just make sure she doesn't take it on an empty stomach alot cause aspirin can be hard on it.
