Fantastic pictures!

Looks awesome!! What did you use for Gandalf's hat? I just have a wire in there which looks okay but yours looks spot on!

Thanks! That is the sculpted Sideshow Gandalf hat. I kinda feel it has a better fit than the cloth Asmus one. But I'm still using Asmus version on my other Gandalf display. The SS version might be a tad too big.

Wow i was looking through this thread because im trying to get an aragorn for my collection and this one really stands out!

Could you tell me which aragorn you used as a base for the figure and waht mods you did ? Or do you have a mod thread about it maybe?

Thanks! Happy to share the process, but be warned, putting a proper Aragorn together don’t come cheap! You pretty much need two figures, imo, and they’re both getting pretty pricey these days I think. I highly recommend going through this and the ACI thread to find all of the mods done by tankgirlfuzzy, rzeznikk, and cman. Most of what I did was copied from/inspired by them. Here you go…

Parts:
Asmus: head, boots, pants, bedroll, ring hand, sharpening stone
ACI: glove hand, shirt, jerkin, coat, quiver, bow, arrows, belt, sword, knife, pipe
SSC Faramir: bracers, cloak, arrows
Body: SSC Temple of Doom Indy

Mods:
- Re-haired the sculpt (here’s a good tutorial)
- Drilled out the neck plug to lower the head
- Removed stock weathering from the pants, coat and jerkin
- Anywhere there were string/ties I replaced with hemp cord (boots, shirt, jerkin, coat, cloak, bedroll). Tried to emulate any metal tips with silver paint/thread.
- Made the cloak green with fabric paint (Jacquard or Dynaflow?)
- Trimmed the bedroll to make it less bulky
- Painted sharpening stone
- Made the tobacco pouch out of leather
- Added a pipe holder
- Added end tip to belt (from Faramir)
- Painted sword and scabbard dark green
- Painted Faramir arrows
- Painted bracers green and greenish gold
- Removed the wraparound string from the bow
- Weathered pretty much everything with sandpaper, acrylic washes and FolkArt antiquing mediums

Plans:
- Darken the hair with marker
- More weathering! Just discovered weathering powders so he’ll probably get hit with those. I was going for a pre-Fellowship look so I think he needs more muck and mud. And I’ll probably ditch/replace the bracers.
- Get Brego back out and start working on him :)

That's it, I think (phew!). Super fun stuff! Good luck in your :aragorn quest!

The other day I'd had a few glasses of wine when Toy Anxiety put up a bunch of old LOTR parts. Never an optimum situation. Or is it? Amongst my somewhat incongruous haul were most of the bits from the Art Figures "The King" set. It's pretty dated to be sure, but with a little modding, it comes up to speed ok. Here are some pics of my WIP Black Gate Aragorn using a mix of AF, ACI and Asmus stuff...

PS - Whoever designed those "clasps" on the surcoat, I want my two hours back.

stuck between this & the ACI version, how good is the asmus one if slightly modded & futz, would definately wanna do the rooted hair mod
The ACI one looks tops but im finding it hard to justify spending between £450-£500 for a figure compared to £200 for the asmus one.
I wouldnt even pay those mental prices for Hot toys older stuff.

I can't stand the head sculpt on the ACI one. People that have it laud it but I don't see it. With the hair mod the Asmus one looks awesome.

Yeah i know what you mean about the ACI sculpt, im not blown away by it, i think it was the clothing really on the ACI one that attracted me to it, but is it worth almost £500 just for that?

iMO no. I think the clothes and weapons are pretty equal except the shirt and boots. ACIs shirt is superior and Asmus boots are better. Add in the awesome base from Asmus and to me it's an easy choice.

I have both and for me the asmus sculpt with the hair mod is the better portrait of the two. Clothing wise, ACI is better (Asmus is still good though) and the green coat is the real show stealer. The Asmus coat is nice and it is wired but I feel that ACI coat hangs better, is weathered and the material used looks more accurate. The ACI weapons are also more detailed. Asmus boots are really nice and can be improved with a bit of weathering, the ACI boots are not quite as good in my opinion as they are hard sculpt and make some poses more difficult. Asmus does have that awesome display stand too.

If your only going to get one it is a tough call! My preferred option (after deliberating about this for some time myself) was to mix and match parts from both (it's expensive but if your prepared to wait an ACI does pop up on here or eBay every so often for a cheaper price). If I was only going to get one it would have been the Asmus because the sculpt is the most important part for me and once modded the Asmus one really shines.

I do not understand the hate of ACI Aragorn. If you have seen it properly haired and repainted compared to properly haired and repainted Asmus, than we could talk.

Because IMO it looks nothing like Aragorn. I've never seen it in person but in all the pics that have been posted the likeness is not there. Some have compared it to a Tonner figure and I can see that. Very Tonnerish or Ken Dollish if you may. I don't understand how some of you think the sculpt is so great.
