We have the same mixed feeling for Bard too,
it is a very well played and presented character in the movie,
but the movie itself was not quite expected.

However, Hobbit is a line that is doomed to lose money,
no matter how much we want or how much we love it,
most of the characters are just not going to work out as collectible.

I agree for the most part but regardless of the movie, Azog, Thorin Oakenshield, as well as both Dain and the Elvin King would make amazing collectibles and immediately recognizable as Middle Earth characters. I mean Azog even has a beer (although I don't like it very much, Bolg's either).

:goodpost:

I would agree. The Hobbit movies weren't my favorites, but I did really like some of the character design work. I'd buy Azog, Bolg, Thorin, Dwalin, Bilbo, Thranduil ... maybe Balin and Dain.

And of course, a few of the overlapping LOTR characters would be most welcome like Galadriel, Elrond (in armor), Gandalf and maybe Legolas in his Mirkwood armor ...

The way Asmus is going I will end up buying every Rings and Hobbit figure they make but I agree that there probably isn't as much selling force behind the Hobbit. Doing a combo Old/New Bilbo with both head sculpts might work and Thorin and Azog outside of those it might be hard to sell them. Maybe Dwalin, Kili and Fili?

Maybe two versions of Legolas, or giving him both his Hobbit and LOTR gear ? some characters like Elrond and Galadriel could be sold as being from the Hobbit, and they would still interest LOTR fans ( Thranduil was an awesome character ) , also Sauron and maybe some Elven warriors ( from the hobbit, or the LOTR prologue) would interest EVERYONE.

:yess: :clap

Really like all the ideas from you guys,
gives us a clear light for the path.

Its likely when we start dwarf (Gimli),
we will go 2~3 dwarfs in a raw to make sure the body is well used to share the mold costs.

So Gimli, Thorin, and everyone loves Dain, (not surprised!)

But there are many human ahead/in between of them too
Like Gandalf Grey in making, Legolas are now under developement.

Awesome news...would like Gimli as a must and Thorin...I like Kili and Fili as well.

I received my Eowyn and I love her! I had prepared myself for a few faults but I didnt have any (apart from the legs seeming too long due to the tight pants, easy fix though). Absolutely love her! Thanks Asmus!!!

As for the Hobbit, while the movies are inferior to the LOTR, there are some great characters in the films! Young Bilbo is a must from that line! I would also like Thorin, Thranduil, Elrond, Azog and Fili and Kili. I've already preordered Tauriel and Bard.

BUT Gimli, Merry and Pippin, Frodo and Sam, Gandalf the Grey and Legolas are more important to me right now.

Throw in Boromir too. He was one of the better ones by Sideshow but he will looked dated next to Asmus figures. I would really love for them to remake Faramir as well.

I am happy with my Eowyn overall and glad to hear people are positive about her on the whole. I think it's a strong sculpt and I can instantly recognise her. It wasn't until Tank Girl pulled her apart did I see the inaccuracies. One thing I noticed though was the inconsistency of the gold of the mail. Mine was so black I couldn't see the hemming but it was clear in Michael Crawford's and Travis Baumann's pics. Apart from the loose bodies I've been happy with this line so far. Having said that if I had been paying around £180 as a lot of you seem to be in dollars I'd be less enthusiastic and would agree with abake and be very selective.

To put prices into perspective Hot Toys figures along with the recent Sideshow offerings have been around £150-£180 with Vision being the first I've seen retailing new at £200 with Luke Skywalker at £205 shortly after. Asmus's figures are retailing between £125-135 as does ThreeZero. Star Ace is a little higher £140-160 with DID, ACI and Kaustic Plastic around £100-£120.

Again I agree with abake as to Asmus's ranking on the scale of quality but I'm happy paying £125-135 as the cheaper three aren't paying licenses. As it stands £150 would be my cut off for characters that aren't personal must haves. I echo the comments asking for Hobbit figures of Thorin, Elf King, Azog etc and would be interested in loose dwarf bodies.

I have been noticing improvements and am really excited for Asmus's Saruman figure and am keen to get Bard. I've been impressed with the way Asmus has been dealing with collectors as well making me confident in buying from them and look forward to future announcements.

Oh and Tank Girl thank you for the book title I've since managed to find a good copy.

Had some time to unbox and futz a bit, and well, while it is a nice figure, it really does fall short on a number of things.

I'm probably going to sound very negative, but let's just lay it out and see where it takes us.

Head Sculpt
I think this is the single best aspect of the figure. I really like the sculpt and the paint apps. While she does look slightly heavy on the make up front, it really isn't distracting IMHO, and the paint apps are nice and clean. The hair works very well, although it would probably look better if it weren't so shiny, which makes it look very doll-y.

Body
I really don't like it. Legs are too long, neck is too skinny, just typical 1/6 "idealised" woman proportions. I wish I could still get Triad's Eves, while they had lots of problems, at least the proportions were much better.

Clothing
The cape (if it can be called that) and pants (leggings, actually) suck. Absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever. The rest seems to work pretty well. I like the chain mail, although the hemming in is baffling, as TankGirl pointed out. The dress looks good and I like the texture.

Gear/Accessories
From a certain distance, everything looks pretty good, but if you get a bit close the failings become apparent.
The boots are some ridiculous hard plastic that negates any ankle movement, why this is so is beyond me. The scabbard and sword look nice at first glance, but the detailing is a bit soft, same with the vest/armour. The helmet seems pretty nice and the chin strap works perfectly. The baldric really is puzzling... why did they purposely do it wrong? It just doesn't hang right and it's impossible to fix (unless you sculpt your own pieces or buy a loose set). I find that really annoying. The whiled is fine, but, again, quite basic. Maybe that's the way it was in the movie as well. The base and broken shield are nice extras, but not very detailed.

Paint apps
Overall they're quite acceptable. Thankfully they did a very good job on the head sculpt, but otherwise they don't look like they belong on a 180 dollar figure (give or take a few dollars).

So I guess my second Asmus LOTR figure leaves me with the same mixed feelings as the first one I got (Witch King).
It's an amazing character, so I'm thankful to Asmus for giving me the opportunity to have one, but it's still pretty far from the main players in 1/6 collectibles. This is not Hot Toys level, it's not Sideshow level, it's not DiD, ACI or Kaustic Plastik level.
Finances permitting, I will continue to support Asmus on characters I really want, because they are taking a chance with this license and deserve some recognition, but I will be very choosy.

Here's hoping to see continuous improvement from Asmus, and a long and rich line of LOTR and Hobbit figures.
Great review abake! You and I are basically in complete agreement, although I'm not particularly fond of the dress personally.

You're welcome YDG! It's a nice reference although light on detail.

Hi all, sorry for the radio silence. I've been hard at work on my Eowyn these past weeks since my last post and am almost ready to show the results. Here's a teaser on what I've been working on... :horror

Stay tuned...

Do you put this much work into all your figures or just this one?

ETA Damn talk about your slow boat from China. I can't believe that the retailer I ordered this from has not got this yet.

No, this is definitely a high-water mark for me. Although, with 90+ figures and counting, only a handful (probably less than 5) are unmodified straight from boxed sets. Most are customized kitbashes that don't even start as boxed sets, and usually every single piece gets altered/weathered/painted. Why do you ask?

Your figures sound cool Tankgirl I like to see some of them. :rock

I applaud your attention to detail. For me though it wouldn't be an enjoyable hobby if i had to put so much work into it to make it presentable. Since you don't do it on all your figures though it's a moot point.

Actually, try 95% of them! :lol

I don't do anything with mine. I just have too much on my plate to do that.

The burnout factor is high. I'm usually all in or all out with my hobbies. I took several years off from 1/6 to fly RC planes but got back in (slowly) the past two or three years. Now it's the RC that's on hiatus 'cause I'm burnt out with that!

Usually putting together a figure takes me about one to three weeks so this two and a half month thing is over the top. But, I've been wanting to do an Eowyn for 12 years since the movie came out so... it's worth it... I think? :cuckoo::eowyn

I understand your determination.
Eowyn, from the Books, is definitely one of the greatest characters, along with Galadriel, Cirdan, Faramir and Denethor. The movies didn't do Eowyn any justice. Still a great performance by Miranda Otto , and great armour and gear.
I'm usually not as patient as you tho, I burn through a project in a few days :) I'm glad you're continuing this!
