Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

I tried using the gray/firm sculpy once and found it very dry... I never got very far with it though. I think you might have to use something with it if its like that?

That's why I was wondering what the differences are between Super Sculpey and Sculpey III.

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

Paint thinner works great to thin or smooth out Super Sculpey, but be careful, you only need to apply a little at a time. Too much and you'll have a soggy mess.
I picked up some basic modeling clay to practice with. Pretty easy to work with and very easy to rework when you make a mistake or want to change something out.
Only thing, I don't know if you can make a cast from it.
Anyone have any experience?

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

GB, did you ever post any of the heads you sculpted?

I had a thread, but can't seem to find it... but here are two I used and put on figures (not great, but I it was a lot of fun).

Both were made with super sculpy, the 2nd one I used airsoft pellets for they eyes... they are great for 1/6.

Thanks for the tip about thinner BillyB, I'll have to give that a try!

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

Just wanted to say how great this is. A place to ask questions (if they haven't been asked already) and not feel ashamed or feel as though I am annoying to the great talent on this board. Starting out is daunting, and not having any help is even more so. Thanks DarkArtist81 for starting this, we all start somewhere and if not for those who have tread the path before us we would not progress as far as we could if on our own.

Will be posting some questions of my own after I read thru what has already been posted.

Glad to have you Moxie! This thread is here to help further the skills of the new artists here on the board, to inspire others to pick up the brush and get creative.

Honestly, I remember how it felt to grab my Evil Ash and slather paint on him... hoping that it would all come out ok. It was nerve wracking and I was lucky it turned out as well as it did. It was the first step, and since that day.... It has been a learning experience day in and day out.

Mikey and Les shared techniques, paint choices and brush tips during my training, due in part to many questions on my end and a general lack of aid online or in books to help teach this art.

It made an impact in my craft and helped me to become who I am today. It was a major factor for me in creating this thread. I wanted to be accessible to anyone who needs help and to create a record of technique, paint choices and so on... to anyone who may seek it.

Thanks DarkArtist81 and to all those who have, and continue to, help us mere mortals walk the halls of greatness.

Maybe we could sticky this so it stays on top?

Hey Galactiboy, what exactly are those airsoft pellets you are using for eyes?
Where can you get them?
That's my biggest hang up while sculpting. Trying to get the eyes shaped and even is tricky.

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

Airsoft pellets are just little plastic BB's. They are used in Airsoft guns and you can get them easily at Walmart and other places that sell them. Just go to the sporting section.

I have like 1,000 of them for $6... way more than I would ever need. Another method is just to roll the sculpey into eyeball sizes balls and bake them. Then pop them into the soft sculpey head and sculpt around them.

Nice thing about the Airsoft is that they are nicely spherical to begin with and about perfect for 1/6 heads.

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

Thanks GB. Very cool original sculpts! Thanks about the eye tip. That is a good one! They do look super at that scale too. (I always use premade balls myself as it always works for me)

I think this is the right thread for this...

I was discussing some paint oriented stuff in another thread about painting over already painted areas, where it is messed up, or needs repainting again, and they asked about how to remove the paint.
Any of you guys have comments in this regard?
I don't strip many heads so I am not sure what works best here. I know I should know, but I hate stripping paint due to residue left in deep corners, like in eyes etc.
So, any thoughts on this method that may help learning folks solve their problems?

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

I use goof off and I've found that using q-tips with a swirly action will get the paint out of all but the tightest corners.

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

Has anybody used Citadel brand paints or brushes? They are mainly used to painted WH 40K miniatures and such. I have about 50 paints and 10 really nice brushes that were never used, as I was going to start playing 40K, but that group of people is just to weird for me. I will be posting them in the Commerce FS section if anyone is interested. Open to PMs after I post it up.

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

Hair... Well, for hair I will normally do one solid color as the base. And atop that I will drybrush lighter shades, usually 2 others.. the lightest last and very sparingly. So it gives the hair life and depth that it previously did not have. It really helps sell the figure's realism.

And for hairlines I usually use a fine brush to try and get fine detail in there, to give it the look one sees in reality. Where you can see where the strands begin. Sometimes I use a wash of skin tone and brush that over the hairline edge to blend it in. Same with a part in the hair, I paint a very thin line of skin tone to simulate the look and blend it with that same wash.

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

Just curious how often the artists of this board paint (or sculpt). Every night? A couple times a week? How does the time you put in now compare to the time you put in as a beginner?

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

I try to paint at least a few hours out of every week. Much more when the commissions are flying in, but when I'm just painting for me, I take it easy.

I can get a lot done in a few hours. If I'm waiting for one figure to dry, I get to work on another figure. The variation keeps me from getting tired or stale, and the multitasking means I work faster.

Well, I paint usually a few hours a week. Usually 3 hours twice a week. I would do more if I had more time.. but you know how that goes. :lol

Back when I started, I was painting every night for at least 2 hours at a time. And it took me a LOT longer per head. Sometimes I would work on one head for two weeks... :google

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

Do any of you customizers think it's possible to add hair to the Padme that just came out?

I'm not sure how that would work with adding to an existing piece but it seems possible to me.

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

Depending on the "hair style" that you want, I don't see why hair made of "Sculpy" couldn't be done. Rooted hair would obviously be more difficult to do.

between twelve and fourteen hours a day, usually 5 or 6 days a week. only rarely 7, when important pieces have to go out for a specific date.

as a beginner i only did one figure for myself, spent a few weeks doing it about 4 or 5 hours a day. then commissions and orders started coming in.

i know have a 4 - 6 month waiting list..... hence the long days :lol

Sometimes I fall behind on pieces (recently because I took on more orders than i could do in the usual timeframe) but i'm trying to get on top of things again. I'd say already paid for pieces are accounting for about my next 3 month's work :google
