Re: The Avengers 2: Avenging Again

More on the potential sequel:

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Joss Whedon suggested that The Avengers was a little heavy on the testosterone and the sequel could use some more female superheroes. That’s a fantastic idea in theory, however, there are two major variables to the statement. First of all, Whedon has to come back or be involved in a second Avengers. At this point, that’s still up in the air. Second, new female superheroes would have to be introduced in one of the upcoming Marvel movies. We have no indication or evidence that there are plans to do so.

Can one or both of those things happen? It’s very possible. Read his quote and discuss which women, if any, could hold their own with Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow?

The quotes come from Entertainment Weekly, who was the only publication to sit down with the writer director as well as his full team of superheroes:

Whedon joked, “I think we need to get some more men on the team,” while Thor’s Chris Hemsworth looked around Johansson at Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, and Samuel L. Jackson and agreed, “Yes, there are too few of us.”

Whedon then got more serious:

Studios will tell you: A woman cannot headline an action movie. After The Hunger Games they might stop telling you that a little bit. Whatever you think of the movie, it’s done a great service. And after The Avengers, I think it’s changing.

Which is all well and good, but who could join the team? Several of the more famous Marvel ladies – Invisible Woman, all the X-Ladies – are at other studios. She-Hulk could probably work, Wasp is the safe bet as an Ant-Man movie is in development and EW’s article surmises Scarlet Witch, Moondragon, Hellcat, or Mantis (a decent bet too being one of the Guardians of the Galaxy).

The thing is if they use Scarlet Witch they'd have to completely cut off anything in her film version's history that'd relate to Magneto.

Re: The Avengers 2: Avenging Again

Wasp or Scarlett Witch would be good. I really pictured ScarJo as the perfect SW though before she was cast as BW. Hard to picture who'd be ideal for that role now.

Re: The Avengers 2: Avenging Again

She-Hulk would be cool but he has to be careful of bringing in to many characters.

Re: The Avengers 2: Avenging Again

Get some females up in hurr.

Re: The Avengers 2: Avenging Again

If they have to add another female, Mockingbird was both Shield Agent and Avenger, amongst other things.

Re: The Avengers 2: Avenging Again

Problem is for that event, you would need characters from other licenses to even do it close to the original comic. And then you would need to introduce a butt load of background story or have a solo Hulk film that leads up to it. And even then you would need to come up with a reason why Thor isn't there and etc.

Well, given Avengers 3 is like, waaaaaaaay off, there's plenty of time for that as well as 2 more solo Hulk films.

Not sure how reliable that is. A little research would've told them Joss is already signed to do the sequel. :huh

Re: The Avengers 2: Avenging Again

The Avengers was so good its kind of hard to picture how they'd match that quality for a sequel. Sure Thanos would *look* cool wreaking havoc but these characters all have pretty completed arcs at this point.

Stark finally became a true "hero" who does more than battle his own run amok creations.

Thor retreived his lost brother and now apparently is free to visit Earth and Jane at his leisure.

Banner finally has a valid "reason" that his life was saved from the gamma rays through his turning into the Hulk.

Black Widow and Hawkey assumedly have cleared the red from their ledgers.

Fury spent five movies trying to assemble this bloody team and he finally did it.

Cap rides off into the sunset seemingly at peace with his new duties in this strange new world.

I don't know. I like it when stories quit while they're ahead. Of course it'll never happen (what with the multisequel deals and additional films already lined up) but The Avengers would make a nice swan song for this current universe of Marvel heroes.
