It's arguably a mix. The "sunken" glowing eyes highly resemble the recent "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" cartoon (which was a fantastic depiction of Ultron). The narrow eyes and curved antennae are actually based on most of his modern versions (Annihilation: Conquest and Age Of Ultron). The sleek yet broad shoulders and armored look was mostly popularized in Annihilation: Conquest. The humanoid features (moving face and all) are probably a nod to some of his recent humanoid forms like his final "techno-organic" form that he adopted in Annihilation: Conquest.

Like I said, I love the final form. His design from the more classic-looking one (as seen on the drones) to a more modern-styled amalgam that resembles his current designs are a nice bit of fanservice for longtime Ultron fans. I guess in my eyes, it's like if people wanted a retro-style Iron Man (with the skin-tight golden undersuit and red armor on top) versus the very popular modern Extremis armor, it's the same way for me with people asking for a wholly "classic" Ultron. I mean, for Ultron fans it's actually nice that we're getting a bit of both. I mean yeah sure the drones look like a "modern" update of his old design, but I actually like the fact that his final form pays tribute to his modern designs.

It's like the difference between just having this:

When we can also have this:

NOTE: Female Ultron is still actually Ultron, rather his model is based on Wasp/Jan hence the uncanny resemblance to his "mother".
Though it should be noted that Ultron made that form by morphing Iron Man's Extremis suit and body (essentially giving Tony Stark a forced sex change). :monkey3 Interestingly, the female version also serves as a precursor to his humanoid form since Ultron was trying to create a more bio-organic body (as I have shown above in the previous images).

Just saw this, fantastic post! :clap

I realize it's suppose to simulate the look of lightning, but Mjolnir looks a lot like the cosmic cube. Not sure if done on purpose.

Although they don't do it often, it's not the first time they have done that in promotional images.

i'm sure there are better examples out there but I can't seem to find them at the moment

Is anyone considering by all the avengers again from this movie?

I suppose hot toys will milk this license and we can b expect at least the 6 avengers, 3 new avengers, hulk buster, drones and ultron for a total of 11 figures not including any shield extras like Maria hill or nick fury.

I own the entire first lineup of Avengers, and plan to get the AoU lineup as well. I made the decision to focus on Marvel 1:6, so it's fine for me. But I can't imagine a lot of people buying and re-buying the same characters for the next 5 years.

I'm sure most will be more selective and keep their favorite representation of each character and only purchase new characters. For me personally, I plan on having a shelf for each Avengers movie, alongside my SHIELD shelf and villains shelf.
