Re: Batman: Arkham City (No Spoilers)

This is pretty damn ridicoulous... https://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/120/1200072p1.html

The Catwoman parts of the Game are redeemable from new copies of the game, if you buy second hand you are not getting one of the most unique additions & highly publicised part of the game.

Publishers said that when they introduced this online pass system it wouodn't take away from the game but unlock additional aspect.

The cattwoman segments are a part of the game, to screw people out of a part of the game is a sad and petty practice.

I always buy new, but for those who can't this is a huge slap in the face. The online pass was said to have been made to cover server costs for the online mode, but now its going over to single player, basically removing parts of the game.

Re: Batman: Arkham City (No Spoilers)

I see your point Nova, but the publishers and dev's gotta get paid. When someone buys a used game the people who made the game don't see a dime. Now who's slapping who in that situation. From the perspective of the people who made the game, the guy who buys used might as well be stealing.

That's the whole point of these one time use passes. To discourage used game purchases, and to make at least some money off those who buy used and want the full experience.

Re: Batman: Arkham City (No Spoilers)

No Octo, they already got paid once for the game (otherwise it wouldn't be second hand) they just wanna get paid again for it.

is the £40 for tha game not enough, it sells millions surely that pays out enough for the devs and publishers.

Erm, no. Loads of games do this - it's just a way of giving people an incentive to buy new. Like how pre-order bonuses are an incentive to pre-order.

It's not detracting from the main game, since the unlock code sections are an additional substory.

Also, I'd expect that anyone who's actually bothered about whether or not they get to play as Catwoman is going to buy it on release anyway. When it comes to people a few months down the line who aren't that big on Batman but wouldn't mind getting it second hand, they probably won't care that they don't get to play as Catwoman. Nobody really likes Catwoman anyway. :)

Re: Batman: Arkham City (No Spoilers)

Yeah, but assuming you aren't buying a replacement, or backup you are a new customer. In other words if there was no such thing as buying second hand you would be buying a new copy.

Does a AAA title like this sell millions of copies? Yes, but it also costs 10's of millions to make. Also with this particular game using a licensed engine, Epic gets a cut of every sale. Rocksteady, the dev's don't get as much from a $60 game sale as you might think.

In the end, the designers made a product, that they put a lot of energy into and I think they deserve to get paid for it. Put yourself in their shoes, wouldn't you feel the same?

Re: Batman: Arkham City (No Spoilers)

Most games make any "online pass" available as a separate option to buy anyways. So you get a used game cheaper and you can buy a pass which will equal out to about the same price as buying new.

Re: Batman: Arkham City (No Spoilers)

It's not detracting from the main game, since the unlock code sections are an additional substory.

In Arkham City you could only play as Batman, in this game Catwoman wasn't publicised as a add-on DLC to be released with the game at launch it was listed as a part of the main game right from the time they said "catwoman will be playable in AC" they didn't say" it would be playable to those who buy the game new" so it was advertised heavily of Catwoman being a main part of the game.

And removed for those who don't buy it new.

This isn't the first game to do this, but it is one of the first to remove single player elements, the practice was called 'Online Pass' to unlock the online portion of a game for a reason. Now they are doing it for single player too.

The point is how long before games are half of what they should be on-disc just to get the secondary market sales?

The reason there is a secondary market is because people who didn't want to buy a game cos it cost too much would get it later for less money, the publishers want that money, but they wouldn't have got that sale in the first place as the customer wouldn't have bought it cos lf the price issue.

Yeah, but assuming you aren't buying a replacement, or backup you are a new customer. In other words if there was no such thing as buying second hand you would be buying a new copy.

A customer of the secondary market has a reason to buy it second-hand, that reason won't change because devs are withholding content from the game in that market, if they won't buy it new for financial reasons, withholding content wont change the cost and there will still be customers who buy second-hand or not at all.

In the end, the designers made a product, that they put a lot of energy into and I think they deserve to get paid for it. Put yourself in their shoes, wouldn't you feel the same?

A game has to be bought once and traded in to become a second hand copy, so they get the payment for that new copy before it goes onto the secondary market, thus they get paid for the game. Then it goes onto the secondary market for those who can't afford it at full retail and they buy it, the publishers want the payment for that same copy of the game again.

Just some more information about the Catwoman DLC:

It is a completely separate mode than the main story - a different icon in the main menu. It's not like you're going through the story mode and it says "Can not access: DLC not installed"

Whenever a company says 'Here's what we'll be releasing on X date, here's what you'll get' it assumes that you're buying new. Why would they acknowledge a second hand market at all? No company in any market (aside from things like vehicles and property) ever acknowledges a second hand market....

The reason there is a secondary market is because people who didn't want to buy a game cos it cost too much would get it later for less money, the publishers want that money, but they wouldn't have got that sale in the first place as the customer wouldn't have bought it cos lf the price issue.
Do you not think that people buying on the second hand market could be harmful to the gaming industry as a whole? And games gradually go down in price anyway, so a customer could just wait until then.

A customer of the secondary market has a reason to buy it second-hand, that reason won't change because devs are withholding content from the game in that market, if they won't buy it new for financial reasons, withholding content wont change the cost and there will still be customers who buy second-hand
But that's a massive generalisation, isn't it? Like I said, withholding content unless you buy (which really isn't withholding anyway since you're quite rightly expected to buy the game new) is an incentive for people to buy it new. So, for those people who could afford it but aren't quite decided on it, it'd be a slight tippage towards buying new over pre-owned.

It's perfectly reasonable for a company to expect the buyer to buy it as new, and perfectly reasonable for them to include a reason to discourage buyers from buying second hand, since that can harm the industry as a whole. People who wait a while and buy second hand may not be able to afford it, but are more likely just not that bothered about the game, and won't really care about playing as Catwoman. Also, removing unused Catwoman codes from second hand copies is usually something decided by the store, rather than being a universal rule.

Re: Batman: Arkham City (No Spoilers)

I prefer to get less games and get them new, than to get more and get them used. If I'm buying a game, I prefer to support those who worked hard to make it possible, rather than some under-handed company like GameStop for example.

Re: Batman: Arkham City (No Spoilers)

Nevermind what I posted earlier - I was wrong. The story mode does incorporate her missions.

Re: Batman: Arkham City (No Spoilers)

So I don't get to play as Catwoman at all and I miss parts of the main story (no matter what they say if they have missions for her then she is part of the story) because I don't have internet to my Xbox? That really sucks.

Hush. Hot damn. I hoped he'd make an appearance. Wonder if we'll see Red Hood as well -- Grayson and Drake are present and accounted for. Jason Todd has to be somewhere.

Spoiler but not really

her missions are interweaved with the main story, so they are a part of it

Re: Batman: Arkham City (No Spoilers)

Arkham City next Tuesday. Third child being born next Thursday (scheduled c-section). Gonna be a hell of a week.

Get to take a couple of days off work, though. Guess I'll pack up the Playstation and bring it to the hospital on Friday. It'll pass the time for the several days we have to hang around there until the wife and kid are paroled.

Holy Crap! Harley accidentally broke the 4th wall! Her tattoo is the image of The Joker from the cover of the Game Informer where Arkham Asylum first debuted.
