Movie was fantastic. They made the right call not recasting T'Challa; it would have required completely ignoring the loss of Chadwick Boseman, and how devastating that was for his family, friends and fellow cast. You want to talk about disrespectful? Having someone new show up in the suit and acting like nothing was different would be horrific. Wakanda Forever was a heartbreaking tribute to Chadwick/T'challa, and grieving, and moving forward, and his presence is all over the film in a powerful way.

Looking forward to adding this new Black Panther figure alongside the previous holders of the mantle, and pleeeease let us get a Namor.

I dont think blafe made a billion dollars or was marketed towards kids though.
No it wasn’t but black panther is more than just an actor.

how is that disrespectful? So a movie being a memorial to a fallen cast member is better? Seems really manipulative . Should we just not have superheroes anymore in film when the actor died? Yes it’s tragic but robbing young black boys of an iconic superhero is even worse imo.

Not giving other actors a chance at the role is not what Chadwick wanted. Black panther was a cultural phenomenon and figure and many loved him.

Also killing off an iconic character off screen is disrespectful. Had this been any other marvel character they would have delayed the film and recasted when the time was right. The movie just feels like it wants you to go in and manipulate you to feel sad about Chadwick’s passing instead of telling a story. It baffles me that people are ok with black panther just being killed off in the mcu so soon when we got so little from him.

Just finished watching this, it was ok...hate to say it but as far as the flow of the movie and entertainment-wise Black Adam was better the Black Panther.
Tchalla's death dues to "an illness" was a cop out to me.
Another annoyance was missing scenes from the first trailer.

There was really no way to handle the death of Chadwick Boseman in a manner that would make all fans happy about it.

If they did as they've done, by effectively writing him out with dialogue, it will upset some fans that the core character was not recasted. ( Though there are practical considerations here, the MCU overall has burned through A LOT of established actors in their universe and there are a lot of DCEU actors who are too known in their roles there to cross over effectively, who is left in terms of young black male actors established enough to take the role? )

If Coogler and Feige wanted to recast T'Challa, then they risked putting a franchise on an unknown or a possibly fringe actor. A few established actors out there who might fit could avoid the role because if the film bombed, they would be blamed for the franchise dying. This happened to Barry Pepper and Battlefield Earth. He took a lot of the blame for the film failing even though clearly it wasn't his fault. It probably hurt his career very badly.

A "girl power" movie fits into current "modern theme" of the MCU. So Feige would have been criticized and called a bigot if he didn't allow a woman to rise up and become a new Black Panther. Also he'd be called a racist. Someone will say, how in the entire world is that racist if you have a black actor/actress replacing a tragically deceased black actor? Which is a good question. But in today's time, when there is controversy, everyone just gets called a racist now in Hollywood. Someone would go down the production crew list and be upset that more minorities weren't working catering or as cameramen, or whatever. Why would Feige want to deal with any of that?

Since Boseman, again very tragically, had some lead time before he passed on ( i.e. this wasn't a sudden death, clearly Boseman and Feige and Coogler knew this was coming ) , he could have filmed some last scenes that would work as an exit. But many would consider that "ghoulish" or criticize that, i.e. exploiting his death to market the film. Then there was the risk of doing that or a total recast, of having his family and estate complaining and making it a huge scandal in the media.

I don't see a good answer here. I don't see a safe answer. I see Feige taking the "safer-ish" answer given the complex situation. In effect, this is how "new Hollywood" works. Productions are basically held hostage. Make a film this way or avoid this ( and yes, that includes not angering the CCP so a filmed is blocked from release in China) or you'll suffer. The end result is a compromised production and end product.

In any of the variations I listed, keeping it as was made, recasting, or Boseman filming exit scenes, any of it could have worked if there's good writing and you focus on telling a good story. But telling a good story is way down the list of requirements now. First is money, always money. Second is not getting "cancelled". Third is bending the knee to "Woke". Good storytelling is just not a priority over other elements and it makes these valuable IPs suffer for it.

The most seamless transition, as much as could be possible, in a complex situation like this, would be to take advantage of the "multi-verse"

Meaning bringing back Michael B Jordan's character from said multi-verse and have him be the new Black Panther. And infuse him in small bits in other films and in end credits scenes to lead up to Black Panther 2. MBJ is Ryan Coogler's No#1 guy so that's a good fit for the director and he's carrying a franchise already ( Creed ) that's been successful. And the character has legacy in the original Black Panther film.

That's the only "recast" I can see working out in some fashion. But why would Michael B Jordan take that risk for his entire career? Taking the role could end up very badly for him. Lots of ways it could all blow up in his face.

HOLY MARVEL STUPIDITY!

In one of the dumbest moves ever they stubbornly don’t recast a superhero who was created before Boseman was even born and then are you ready…ARE YOU READY….
they introduce T’Chala’s 10 year old son named T’Chala!

How stooooopid lol

If they were going to do that then they should’ve just RECASTED IN THE FIRST PLACE! :slap

I thought Denzel's kid, the lead actor in "Tenet" would do just fine.

Since Boseman, again very tragically, had some lead time before he passed on ( i.e. this wasn't a sudden death, clearly Boseman and Feige and Coogler knew this was coming )

Fiege and Coogler didn't know. Boseman didn't tell anyone. They were all as shocked as the rest of us.

I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I’m mixed on how I feel regarding T’Challa’s passing.

On the one hand I sort of get it that it would be rough to just replace Chadwick Boseman. Flip side of that is T’Challa is an important character and it kind of comes across like he’s a bit disposable by just killing him off.

I think I would have somehow explained his absence from this film and left him out of it leaving the door open fot him to return in a third film. By that point recasting would sting a bit less and Chadwick’s passing wouldn’t be as fresh.

In some ways it feels like Disney/Marvel Studios are taking advantage of the situation. Like: “so we can recast this hero and have a female character who’s also African American take up the mantle” and that’s to their benefit of being more progressive, which I’m not against but in a way the way it’s handled feels kind of weird.

Shame on Marvel for asking Letitia Wright to be BP in just the second movie!

Shame on Letitia Wright for agreeing to take on the BP name and not forcing Marvel’s hand to just find another competent black actor to fill the role.

Chadwick DOES NOT OWN THE CHARACTER.

YES I CRIED WHEN HE DIED!

BUT…

No actor owns their characters.

But of course you’re going to have people say how perfect it is and how it respects his legacy. He played more characters than tchalla. Just a stupid move.

Saw the film last night and I enjoyed it.

I am hoping for a time jump/time travel or something so the new T'Challa can be the Black Panther. And not aged up for young avengers, I'd prefer him to be aged up to the current main Avengers (Captain Marvel, Sam Wilson, Thor, Dr Strange, Shang Chi, etc.)

Shuri was better than I expected, but I think we need another T'Challa BP instead.

Just saw the movie, it was ok. In my opinion Letitia Wright was not ready to carry the movie as lead. Unpopular opinion: I quiet liked Namor, the actor did a fine job and I kinda liked that he doesn’t look like your usual muscle dude.

But what the **** was that Iron Heart suit in the final battle. All the Wakanda tech and she builds a suit that looks like a japanese plastic toy. Also the suit design for Okoyes blue suit, damn thing looked like Abe from the original Hellboy movies.

If this was the big finale to Phase 4 then Marvel Phase 4 is officially a big dud.

If was ok.

Many parts were a ton better than the first but still over developed with low MCU impact.

Phase 4 has really taken the superhero comic flow out of the MCU. NWH is the last movie IMO that still felt like a comic book.

This film is Avatar meets the Abyss ..This film needed a male BP

It’s good …but there is nothing about this film that makes you think MCU anymore

In short we need the spidey films to continue for those that still feel like classic superhero films

I wouldn't say it has a low MCU impact. With the Sokovia Accords gone, this movie sets the world environment.

Wakanda is probably the best nation positioned to keep world peace in the absence of the Avengers but it is currently without a ruler.

You have a new superpower nation that is looking for an excuse to wage war to the rest of the world and is only being held back by Wakanda. While that is happening, the current world's nations are turning against Wakanda and powered beings as a whole, and Val de Fontaine setting up to destabilize Wakanda.

Sokovia who….

We are in the Multiverse saga those accords are very far in our rear view mirror.

This movie ultimately falls flat at addressing what phase 4 was all about.

I’m still going to get the HT female BP though because it’s obvious …eventhough I probably won’t see this film again until it ends up on D+:sneaky:
